Old Friends and Dirty Memories
Title Track – Cock Sparrer: “What’s it like to Be Old?”
“I hope you’re happy?” I ask Rid who can’t stop smirking like an idiot.
“Lenny…” He looks at me all self-satisfied. “I found God, and boy was it worth it.” Rid blows smoke through his damn smile.
“Was it worth being chased out of the cloister by mother Ilinka in your boxer shorts? The damn penguins kicked me out in the middle of a wet dream. I didn’t even have time to wake up properly. I mean the sun wasn’t even up. We’re lucky they didn’t chase us out with pitchforks and torches. I’m sure the girl’s in trouble too.” I decide to take a cig.
“No worries there. They can only give her more chores. These nuns aren’t into that whole self-punishment thing so she won’t get whipped. She told me herself. Plus, I didn’t push her to do anything. Fuck, she pushed me to stick it…”
“Jesus Rid!” I stop him. “I’m not in the mood right now.” The sun barely just got out and I’m not even in the mood to be alive. I’m not even sure I’m completely alive.”
Rid lies down into the grass. It’s still moist but he doesn’t mind. The fucker is all warm and is busting my chops with his self-satisfied mug.
“We’re close to the village. It’s just down the road. What do we from there on out?” I don’t look at him because the smirk would drive me crazy. Morning is not the time to be smiling! “Rid?” He doesn’t answer. Instead I hear him snore and then I see him turning on his side. “Fuck!” I slap him. “No sleeping now bitch!”
“Damn it Lenny you at least got some shuteye.” He looks at me like a kid.
“I wasn’t banging the new nun in town. Now that we got nowhere to stay we have to think of a way to get something to eat and skip this dump.”
Rid doesn’t answer me right away and I can see he’s thinking. I don’t think much, it’s too early for that. I just wish some coffee would fall into my lap.
“We steal a chicken!” Rid says and starts laughing real loud. I can’t help myself because it just sounds so funny like that. “No really. We steal a chicken or something similar to eat and after we’re full we’ll see how to hitch a ride.” He wipes off laughing tears from his eyes. “I mean, it’s a village. They have to have something to eat.” Well, it does sound like something we could pull off. The villagers won’t miss one chicken. We got nothing to sell or any place or bar where we could play a game for money. “Good thing the nuns didn’t take the knives.” Rid ads to kill the silence. Granted, it is a good thing.
“What are we waiting for?” I stand up and give Rid a hand. “Let’s move. I’m hungry.” He smirks and puts his backpack on so we’re off.
The road down to the village is steep but there’s no movement besides us.
