The Nose Knows

If you are ever attempting to check the truthfulness of a small, carved, wooden boy called Pinocchio, then I suggest you observe the length of his nose as you ask the Guilt Questions. Unfortunately, human noses don’t increase or decrease in size when telling lies, but they can still assist you with detecting deception.

As a matter of course, people will touch their nose from time to time—this is normal. However, some liars will touch their nose with increased frequency. During your Control Questions, observe how often the person touches his or her nose—perhaps not at all. When you ask your Guilt Questions, if the person commences touching the nose, then I recommend undertaking a re-examination, as this could be a lying sign. If this occurs a second time during the re-examination phase, it is unlikely it was a coincidence and more likely a lie.

Liars touch their nose either as a method of momentarily covering their mouth with their hand (giving them a comfort/protection barrier) or because the tissues within their nose become engorged with blood, causing an itching sensation.23 The liar then necessarily touches the nose to alleviate this itchy feeling. Doctor Charles Wolf (University of Utah) and Doctor Alan Hirsch (Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, Chicago) reviewed in detail the testimony by former president Bill Clinton in relation to the Monica Lewinsky matter.24 In addition to other lying signs that Clinton exhibited during his testimony, Doctors Hirsch and Wolf found when the former president was telling the truth, he barely touched his nose at all. However, when he made statements which were less than truthful, he touched his nose regularly.25

If you have the time, it’s a worthwhile exercise doing Internet video searches on people who have been interviewed by police or media after which they have proven to be lying. While you don’t have the opportunity to ask Control Questions, you may notice these people touching their nose frequently. On its own, nose touching isn’t proof positive of deception, but when it occurs in the re-examination phase together with other lying signs, your “Liedar” is accurate.
