28. A rather war-weary Hurricane, also fitted with the Rotol propeller. Sergeant Laurence ‘Rubber’ Thorogood poses in an 87 Squadron machine during the Battle of Britain at Bibury in Gloucestershire.

29. Pilot Officer ‘Crasher’ White and his 504 Squadron Hurricane at Fiton during the Battle of Britain.

30. Another Hurricane from Hawker’s first production batch. Pilot Officer Peter Down of 56 Squadron scrambles from North Weald in August 1940.

31. Hurricanes from the initial production batch were modified to maintain them as operationally capable. This is one such machine, L2012 of 605 Squadron, snapped at Croydon during September 1940. Close to London, the Croydon fighters were heavily engaged, and the airfield was repeatedly bombed – as evidenced by the groundcrews’ steel helmets. On 15 September 1940 – Battle of Britain Day – Pilot Officer Tom Cooper-Slipper rammed a Do 17 of 5/KG 3 over Marden. The pilot safely baled out.
