Emanuel ignored Riordan. “One of my kids’ father is a vet. He takes care of my cat, so I know he’s great. We can go there. It’s usually only on appointment, but I’m sure he won’t have a problem if we bring your dog there right now.”

“Not my dog,” Riordan grumbled.

“Are you sure? Because he looks comfy.”

The dog had burrowed into Riordan’s arms and looked on the verge of falling asleep. At first glance, Emanuel had believed he was a puppy, but he wasn’t so sure anymore. He suspected that the dog was young and that he was starving, which would explain why he was so small.

“I told you, he’s your Christmas gift.”

Emanuel arched a brow. “And I told you I can’t take a dog. I already have a cat, and Steve hates most people and animals.”

Riordan squinted. “You have a cat named Steve.”

“Yes, and? Come on. We have to go before it gets too late and the vet office closes.”

Emanuel moved toward the entrance, grabbed his jacket, and put it on. He was already working on his boots by the time Riordan reached him.

“I really can’t keep him.”

Emanuel shook his head. “I don’t see why not. You have a nice home and a lot of space for him to run around. Besides, you need company.”

“I don’t need anything,” Riordan said in a tone that Emanuel was starting to recognize.

He was getting stubborn, but he hadn’t yet realized that Emanuel could be as stubborn as him, if not more. Only one of them was going to win this, and it would be Emanuel.

Emanuel straightened. “Come on. We’ll use my car.”

Riordan made to hand the dog over, possibly to tie his boots and put on his jacket, but Emanuel shook his head. He wasn’t going to risk it when Riordan was being adamant that he didn’t want the dog.

“I’ll be in the car, so hurry up,” he said as he left the house.

Riordan called after him, but Emanuel ignored him. He climbed into his car, turned on the engine, and blasted the heat so the dog wouldn’t be cold. There was no way to know how long the poor puppy had been outside in the snow, and it was a miracle that he’d found his way to Riordan.

A Christmas miracle.

Emanuel’s chest tightened. He hadn’t been sure he could help Riordan, but maybe he wouldn’t have to. Maybe the dog would be enough to get Riordan to open his heart. At the very least, it would be a good first step. Riordan needed to realize that he wasn’t an island and that he didn’t have to go through life alone. He also had to see that not everyone was like his parents and that he could find someone to love and who would love him for the rest of his life.

And maybe that person would be Emanuel.

He bit his lower lip and watched as Riordan came stomping out of the house. He was still holding the dog, and Emanuel smiled when he saw that Riordan had bundled him up in a blanket he’d taken from the couch.
