CHAPTER TEN

Honor

It takes an hour after Lukas leaves before we have everyone evacuated and loaded into the buses. Many of the healthy Elbirfae choose to spread their wings and fly. After two years of having to remain beneath the grid of the prison, the freedom of soaring is too much to resist.

“Where are we headed, lass,” Mac asks, as he rallies the last of the FCO enforcers into a truck.

“We have to drive at least to the Fringe and then we can take a portal to the hub in Dornte.”

“We could do that, but could I offer another suggestion?” Tundra asks.

“Of course, what are you thinking, T?”

“The Amberloq compound where Valorous ruled is not far from this sector of Dornte once we get out of the Fringe and into the quadrant proper. Since the home biomes of our people have been destroyed, I suggest we go there for the temporary housing until these survivors can rebuild.”

I consider his suggestion and come up with a question of my own. “If the buildings and villages within the biomes have all been destroyed, what makes you think that Valorous’s compound is intact?”

“Because we went there after we left Mount Hekko,” Dune says. “From what we could tell, Laryssa and the Blood Witch used the compound once the Amberloq warriors were slaughtered.”

“We think they were searching for the Amberloq Chronicles,” Tundra adds. “There was evidence to support our theory that they stationed a group of people there full-time. We believe when Lukas and Creed eliminated those two women as a threat to the quadrant, whoever was stationed there left in a hurry before being discovered.”

I like the sound of that.

“If it’s intact and there is space enough to house these displaced citizens, that’s good enough for me. While we’re there, I’d like to access the Guardian’s Library and see if my aunt continued her duty to record the important events during her ruling.”

“I believe she did,” Tundra says. “Your aunt might have done things very differently than you, but she had you in mind as her successor for much of her reign. She loved you and believed in your abilities.”

“A lot of good that does me. I could’ve used her in my life to prepare me to take her place as the crown’s protector. Instead, she left our family vulnerable to be taken prisoner and tortured.”

“That’s in the past,” Dune says. “You’re going to rule your own way and things will be different.”

Tundra nods. “And now that we have representation from the third biome, your Biome General should feel the call and join us in rebuilding the Amberloq forces.”

I hadn’t thought of that. Another General? Six people in a mating bond? Why not keep adding men? Maybe I’ll start a commune.

“When do you think he’ll feel the call and join us?”

Dune and Tundra exchange a look.

“We felt it immediately,” Tundra says.

“Yeah, as soon as you woke,” Dune adds.

I scan the windows of the buses, trying to think of who the dominant warrior was from the Forested Jungle Biome.
