MARC AND LAURA WALKED up the stairs of the bed and breakfast, Laura carrying a nearly full bottle of wine and two stemmed wine glasses.

She’d cornered a male server in the supply closet, giving him a quick blow job and liberating the bottle of wine. The glasses she grabbed off the bar.

“Planning to meet someone tonight? There might be a waiter still cleaning up at the party,” Marc said, not unkindly.

“No, silly, I’m inviting myself into your room for a nightcap.”

“No, Laura. I’ve had enough to drink tonight and so have you.”

“Keeping track of how much I drink? How very sweet of you.”

Marc opened the door to his room and Laura pushed her way in. “Come on. Just one drink. I don’t want to finish the bottle alone. Then I’ll leave. I promise. And you shall remain unsullied and chaste.”

“You promise?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. He threw his key card on the table by the TV.

“Scout’s honor,” Laura said, raising two fingers.

“That’s three fingers for Scout’s honor, Laura.”

“It is? How do you know? Were you the good little Boy Scout?”

“I was.”

“I didn’t know that about you, but I can see it.” Laura placed the wine glasses on the small table in the corner of the bedroom and poured the rich Cabernet she’d nabbed from the server. She still saw the look of sweaty bliss on his face after the blow job. The catering staff wasn’t getting this bottle for their clean up meal tonight.

An hour and a half later, the bottle was empty.

“Laura, you said you’d leave without a fuss,” Marc said, standing up.

“I don’t think I said I’d go without a fuss, but I will go,” she said. She stood up and leaned into Marc and kissed him. He didn’t intend to, but he ended up kissing her back. Then he pulled away.

“Laura, you can see yourself out,” he said, heading to the bathroom.

As Marc’s back was to her, she swiped the key card to his room. “I’ll leave, Marc,” she said under her breath. “But I’ll be back.”

Marc splashed cold water on his face and looked in the mirror. He shook his head and tried not to think about Laura’s kiss. He felt guilty. He needed to get Laura out of his mind and out of his life forever.

He stripped down to his boxers and got into bed. He opened the window near the bed and felt a cool breeze. The breeze felt good. After all the wine he’d had that evening, he fell asleep quickly and deeply.

Laura sat in her darkened bedroom wearing her sheer black silk lingerie. She was waiting until she could be sure Marc would be asleep. His key card felt hot in her hand.

Laura looked down at her phone. The time read 2 a.m. She quietly went to her door and slipped out of her bedroom, heading to his room.

She paused to listen at the door and heard nothing. She didn’t want to be caught by anyone in the hallway, or by him when she opened his door.
