13 – ‘O CHRISTMAS TREE

I LUGGED THE CHRISTMAS tree into the living room, leaving the door open wide, snow flurries blowing inside. I’d promised Holly that morning that I would pick one up so that we could decorate it tonight. She’d always been fond of Christmas.

I was hoping after we’d had lunch today that I could convince her to go with me and pick out the tree. But when she refused lunch, I figured tree hunting together was probably out of the equation, too. After all, we would be destined to run into someone we knew at the tree farm.

We knew the family that owned the farm. So, I decided to uphold my end and bring the tree home, anyway.

I’d just set it upright in its stand when Holly came down the stairs.

“Oh, you got it!” she exclaimed.

“Mm,” I muttered, looking up.

I lifted an eyebrow and then returned to tightening the screws in the stand.

Holly walked to the front door and closed it.

“It’s kind of cold in here,” she said, walking to the gas fireplace and turning it on.

My attention returned to the tree as I stood and walked around it, straightening the position and moving it a little to the left and then back to the right. I checked the angle again and moved it once more.

When I’d finished that, I focused on adjusting the branches and pine needles.

“It looks great,” Holly said behind me.

Nodding and releasing a grunt, I headed in the direction of my room. Planning to go to the attic to grab the Christmas decorations Sam stored there.

“Gaige?”

“Yeah,” I called over my shoulder.

“Are you mad at me?”

I turned to see her walking in my direction, curvy hips swaying side to side in those little bitty pink cotton shorts she wore. The matching tank top was barely containing her breasts.

Too bad she had a white cotton robe covering all of that. It made it difficult to see the curvature of her ass. But I didn’t need to anyway. There was no reason to tempt myself with something I didn’t plan on indulging in.

“No, I’m not mad,” I said, pulling my hand over the top of my hair before I rested my hands at my waist.

“You’re not talking to me.”

“What’s there to say?” I shrugged.

“I was speaking to you.”

“And I answered.”

“No, you gave off a series of grunts and groans. Are you pissed at me because I didn’t go to lunch with you today?”

“I don’t want to do this,” I said, turning back toward the direction I was headed in before she stopped me.

“Gaige!” she said, grabbing my arm.

Turning around, I refused to meet her gaze but looked up at the ceiling. I didn’t want to do this shit with her. I knew it would get us nowhere.

“What, Holly?”

“Why’re you acting like this?”

Looking at her, I frowned. “I got your message loud and clear, okay? You’re not trying to be friends, or cool, or anything else. I’m just good enough to fuck late at night in my bedroom when there’s no possibility anyone would find out.
