Chapter nine
The next morning, Grace awoke to the soft rays of sunshine filtering in through the curtains. As she stretched and yawned, her body felt lighter and more relaxed than it had in⦠how long? Years, probably.
It was all that decorating, she thought. Bend to get ornaments out of a box, stretch to hang them up on the wall⦠It's practically yoga.
Her phone alarm beeped at her, warning her about an upcoming meeting.
The will said that Grace had to live in the house, but it didn't say she had to stay in it 24/7. It was about time she popped back into the office â even though there were some client meetings that she'd really rather avoid. With a scowl, Grace silenced the alarm and forced herself out of her big warm bed and into the chilly winter air.
Grace quickly showered and dressed. The selection of clothes that she'd brought along with her to the house was getting repetitive⦠but the remaining days of the year were counting down fast. Soon, she'd be heading back home.
As she left her bedroom, she glanced one last time at Isla's door. When she'd called it quits and gone to bed the night before, Isla was still up, working on her art. Over the last few weeks, Grace had got the impression that that happened a lot: staying up all night creating, crashing at an inhuman hour, and then waking long after the rest of the world had already begun to do its thing.
Ah, well. That was how creatives, right? Grace remembered her own college days, caught up in the joy of architecture. She smiled ruefully. It had been a while since she felt that way.
And speaking of⦠She really had to get going for that meeting. With a sigh, she headed downstairs, mentally reviewing the schedule ahead of her. No time for breakfast â she'd grab something on the way.
As she was about to leave, a brightly drawn note on the fridge caught her eye. OPEN ME, it read in looping handwriting.
Curious, Grace opened the door.
Nestled in-between all the ingredients that Isla had brought for cooking practice, was a lunchbox. It was bento-style, wrapped up neat and cute. TAKE ME, another note said.
Grace stared at it. She shut the fridge door again, looking at the note as if it held any further clues, but it stubbornly refused to clarify things.
Isla⦠had made her lunch? There was no-one else in the house, so it had to be for her.
With a disarmed smile, Grace grabbed it and headed out the door. She had a long day ahead of her.
And then, at the end of it, she'd return home to thank her caring wife.
