Cossack Security units, June 1941–December 1942

The first Cossack units were designated Security Bns, while the mounted regts were intended for the planned 1st Cossack Division. By Dec 1942, 15 regts and 14 bns had been formed. Army Group North had 3 Cossack mtd sqns numbered 207, 281 & 285, later designated mtd battalions. Army Group Centre had 12th Plastun Regt and two Security bns numbered 137 & 600. On 22 Aug 1941, Red Army Podpolkovnik Ivan N. Kononov came over to the Germans with his 436th Rifle Regt (of 155th Rifle Div) at Mogilev, eastern Belarus, declaring his regiment’s willingness to fight against Stalin. General Max von Schenckendorff, GOC AG Centre Rear Area, recognized Kononov’s potential and, ignoring Hitler’s orders, retained the regiment as ‘Cossack Hundred 102’, later Cossack Bn (Kosaken-Abteilung) 600. The 137th Mtd Bn was formed Oct 1942, and 4 sqns – 443 & 1–3/581 – became mtd bns in 1943.
