The gods had it in for him. Brody Taggert knew that for sure. Because here he was, in a remote mountain cabin, with the woman he had sworn was the most dangerous to him, the one human being on earth he most had to stay away from.
Because of how he had felt for that moment after he had told her about the Murphy girl. The burden lightened.
Because of how he had felt when the truck started to slide, and as they had walked through the cold night here: as if he would lay down his life for her, without one thought, gladly.
Because of how he had felt, really, from the first moment he had met her, as if his world was tilting.
And mostly because of how he felt right now.
Strangely contented to be with her. Of course, being out here, far away from the trappings of civilization, had always had that effect on him. Soothed something in him. Made him aware of something bigger running the show.
So why had he not come here with his grief?
Because these places had always belonged to him and his brother together. He with his rifle, Ethan with his sketchbook.
He had thought he would feel nothing but pain returning to the places that had been theirs together, alone.
But he was not alone. And for a reason he could not fathom, he was not resentful of Lilaâs presence in this place that had been so special to him and Ethan.
He snorted at his philosophical turn. The truth about his contentment had not a thing to do with philosophy. He had been handed a bad situation, and was making the best of it. He had found them shelter from a storm that was going to get a lot nastier before it abated. That was something to feel grateful for. Lila had always made him feel protective, and now he was protecting her, and it was strangely satisfying.
Of course, in a few minutes the thing she was most going to need protecting from was himself, since he was about to get Lila Grainger out of her jeans.
Okay, not in the way that a man usually thought of that.
Then again, he had a feeling things with Lila Grainger would probably never go quite the way a man thought they should or would.
He had fed her, and now she was drinking tea. The color was returning to her hands, and there was an expression of peace on her face that made him wish he could capture moments with a pencil, as Ethan had.
A few strokes of pencil or charcoal, and a moment saved forever. Brody had books full of those etchings at home, put away in boxes that he never opened.
But suddenly he felt ready to look at them again, to see the world through his brotherâs eyes.
Lila shivered, despite the warmth of the fire, and he knew she was never going to be warm as long as she had on those soaked jeans.
âUh, youâre going to have to take those pants off,â he said.
