Austin

Chapter 13

Something was wrong. I could feel it in my bones.

Lily would kill me if I barged into her conference like a crazed lunatic, but Angel was in trouble, or upset at the very least. I couldn’t explain how I knew it, but I did.

It was driving me insane. Everything inside of me screamed to go to her.

Instead, I paced the back room, practically wearing a path in the carpet. It took a lot of restraint not to bust down the door and check on my mate.

Wyatt arrived to find me in this state. One look at me and he burst out laughing.

“It’s not funny, asshole.”

“It really is. Are you still on the I’m never taking a mate train?”

“Shut up.”

“Have you even talked to her?”

“Yes, I’ve talked to her.”

“Really? When?”

“Last night. This morning.”

“Damn, Austin. You’ve already gotten that girl in your bed?”

“Technically yes, but not like you think. Mom invited her to stay over because of the storms last night.”

“Your mother invited your mate to have a sleep over with you?”

“Yeah, that’s about how it went.”

“Wow. I would have expected you to be running for the hills as far away from her as possible.”

I shrugged. “I wanted to. I mean that makes sense to me.”

“But what?”

“I actually got to know her.”

“Well, now you’re screwed,” he teased.

“Asshole.”

“Is that what has you freaked out so bad you’re pacing? You know that’s a sign your wolf is agitated, right?”

“Hell yes he is. Wyatt, I can feel her. Something’s not right. Angel’s upset or something. I don’t know how I know that, but I do.”

“Shit. How far did you take things last night?”

“We just talked, that was it. And then we fell asleep.”

“In bed?”

“Yes, in bed.”

“Were you dressed when you woke up?”

“Yes, you asshole. I didn’t touch her, I mean I guess at some point we snuggled in our sleep, because she was using me as her personal body pillow when she woke up this morning, but that was it. I swear. This shouldn’t be happening. I shouldn’t be able to feel her emotions so clearly.”

“Are you sure they’re hers and you’re not just self-projecting your own?”

I scowled at him.

“You’re not helping,” I said through gritted teeth.

“Have you even kissed her?”

“No. Nothing.”

“Then you’re probably just reading more into it than you think.”

Suddenly the door opened, and Lily and Kelsey walked in. Sydney and Angel were right behind them. I saw her dab at her eyes.

“I knew it,” I muttered, rushing to her side. “What’s wrong? What happened?”

“Austin, calm down,” Lily said.

I ignored her. “Angel, what’s wrong?”

I was on the verge of losing it, but she just looked at me like I was insane. It was valid. I definitely felt like I was losing my mind.

As if I wasn’t worked up enough, freaking Eddie walked in and bumped into her, shattering a stack of glasses he was carrying. That dude was a menace. I had no idea why Kate insisted on keeping him around.

“Sorry,” he said at the same time Angel yelped.

I could smell blood and it nearly pushed me to the brink of being feral.
