The next day was much the same as all others. Enough so that I could pretend that both times I succumbed to Troy and my own libido was all a dream. But I must not have hidden my feelings about it all very well as my boss, Natalie asked me about it on a video conference call the next day.

“You seem a bit off today, Lizzie. Is everything alright?” she asked.

This job was important to me, not just for the money, but feeling like I was going to make a difference with people, similar to how I had with Bridget in helping her express her feelings so that Troy could understand her better. So, I didn’t want my emotional state to ruin it.

“Sorry. I’m alright. As far as the—”

“Are you sure? I know I’m your boss, but I’m your friend too. If there’s something bothering you.”

“It’s just man issues. Nothing important.”

She laughed. “Oh God. Men. If that’s the case, then you do need to spill.”

I shook my head. “It’s nothing really. Just a little whiplash from a man who seems attracted to me but isn’t interested—” I cut myself off. This was my boss. I didn’t need her knowing my business.

She huffed out a breath. “Sing it sister. It’s a miracle that I didn’t have to wear a neck brace when I started seeing Hunter.”

“Really?” I’d met them together and the way Hunter looked at her, it was hard to imagine he’d not been head-over-heels with her.

“We actually didn’t like each other much in the beginning, but the chemistry was there, you know. So, we started as a fling…and…well…for me at least, it was more, but he kept running hot and cold.”

“What did you do?”

“Honestly? I gave up on him.”

“And once he couldn’t have you, he realized he loved you?”

“Something like that.”

That wouldn’t happen with me and Troy. “He’s open to an affair, but I’m not built like that.”

“I get it. I can’t speak against it because things turned out perfect for me, but I do understand not agreeing to that, especially if you feel like you could fall for him, but he wouldn’t fall for you. It’s a heartache in the making. Then again, the love of a good woman can change a man. At least that’s what Hunter tells me.”

I smiled. Between Nina and Jess, and now Natalie, I was beginning to see that love was possible. For me, it wouldn’t be with Troy or even Dr. Porter. But maybe there was someone out there for me. To find him, I’d have to get out more and stay away from Troy. Both seemed doable. In fact, now that baby Gabriel was a few months old, maybe Nina would be willing to play my wing-woman for a night on the town.
