Chapter Six

Ethan remained motionless, his eyes heavy-lidded in a manner that made my skin tighten along my bones. The tension crackling between us was a live wire. And I didn’t want to admit it, but I kind of liked it too—the idea of belonging solely to one person for the rest of my life. Even so, I was embarrassed as all hell.

“You can’t admit stuff like that out loud,” I whispered, pressing one hand against my forehead while the other sat on my hip.

Ethan shrugged, leaning into the doorjamb. “You asked, and I’m an honest guy.”

“That’s an understatement,” I muttered.

The smug response should’ve pissed me off, but fuck, it was attractive. I was—he was—we were, uh, compatible. Andrew’s insistent expression came to mind, urging me to give it a go. Shaking out my hands, I made the decision for the both of us, shoving my way inside the apartment. Ethan let me through and I heard the door shut with finality behind us.

This was it. I’d made my bed, so I had to lie in it.

It didn’t matter that it felt like I’d accidentally snuck into a hungry lion’s den. I clasped my hands together and turned toward Ethan, rocking back on my heels. He was still staring at me, now with his back pressed against the door and hands caught behind him like he was trying to contain himself. From doing what? Touching me? Kissing me?

My cheeks burned hot at the thought, and I glanced away, checking out the space. It was a large studio apartment, probably almost two thousand square feet. Ropes of lights were strung around the perimeter of the room, sparkling a flashing white. Christmas pillows were stacked across the couch, and his desk chair had a bow tied to the back of it. The holiday details were festive, but tasteful, I liked it. Nearest to the door was a fully stainless steel kitchen in immaculate condition. It didn’t even look like he cooked for how clean the stovetop was.

I chuckled to myself when I spotted the multitude of bookcases along the wall to the right, stuffed full of colorful fantasy titles. On top of them was fake snow covered in oranments and reflective tinsel. A computer desk in an L shape sat in the corner beside them, piled with organized stacks of paper and books off to one side. Above it was a corkboard lined with notecards covered in curving scrawl. I wanted to go over there and read them, but it felt too invasive, so I took a few more steps into the center of the room instead.

A bathroom door was closed on the left, and a few paces past it stood a king-sized bed tucked beside the floor to ceiling windows. The navy sheets and soft blankets were messy compared to the rest of the apartment, leaving me to think about what Ethan looked like while he slept… and what he slept in, if anything. My mind flared with images of his naked chest and I just about gasped my lungs right out of my chest.
