Chapter Eight
Nick
When I found the card, my initial reaction was to put it back. I was so glad I didnât. Hearing him tell me he would call me Papa Nick told me so much more than just the name he chosen for me. It told me that he had been thinking about this, really thinking about it. And that mattered more than I realized, relief filling me from the moment the name escaped his lips.
I grew up where friends called their grandfathers papa, and it wasnât a name Iâd have even considered for myself, especially since I was the younger of the two of us. But it fit. I wasnât sure how or why, but it just did.
I half expected him to be wide awake and wanting to talk about all things when I came out of the bathroom. Instead, I found him sound asleep, snoring softly and snuggling the stuffie I gave him. In a way, it all came down to that stuffie and me wanting to give him a Secret Santa. Go silly community-building office activities, go.
After turning off the light, I climbed into bed and allowed myself to fall asleep to the sounds of a purring kitten and a sleeping little. What could be better than that?
I woke up thanks to a kitten walking on my head. âShh, heâs sleeping.â I slid out from beneath the covers and picked her up once I was settled on the floor. âYou probably are hungry and need some alone time.â
She was active and healthy, but the bed was high. My guess was that she wanted to eat and drink and use the litter and, when I set her down, she proved me right on all counts. The sun was barely starting to rise, and my initial thought was that Iâd wait for her to be done and then weâd both climb back into bed, but, as I walked past the kitchen, I got a better idea.
I took my phone from the charger and looked up some tutorials on pancake animals. They didnât look too complicated, and I knew they would make Cole smile.
And they did make him smile, but more at how horribly they turned out. I didnât mind. The end result was the same.
âI didnât want to get out of bed, but then I remembered the vet appointment.â He shoved another forkful of pancakes into his mouth. They tasted good, and that was the important part. âIf all is well, and he doesnât know who the owner is, we should find a feed store and see if they have a carrier. Usually those places have a bunch of pet stuff.â
I took his word for it, not having been in one myself.
âThat sounds like a marvelous idea.â Having him hold her the entire time was fine for half an hour, but not for a most of the day trip. Sheâd be over it by lunch, if she lasted that long.
âThanks for the pancakes.â He set the fork down, and I couldnât help the disappointment when he didnât say my name.
