Chapter Sixteen

Johnny convinced Addison to leave the gun locked in the glove compartment when they went inside the police station. She didn’t argue—this time. He was pretty sure guns weren’t allowed inside by civilians. And truthfully, he was having a hard time picturing her holding a gun. The vision just wouldn’t form in his mind.

Yeah, he knew she had to be tough to survive what she went through, but every time he tried to picture her with knees bent, gun pulled and aimed at a foe, well, the vision fell apart. Addison was of average height, curvy, and…soft.

His heart skipped a beat. Yeah, she was really soft, and if he didn't stop thinking about how soft she was, he would be in a very uncomfortable position when he got out of the car.

Addison took the keys from him after he locked the glove compartment with the gun inside. She had insisted on driving. As she put it, getting back to her normal routine.

He didn't like to drive, so he didn't argue. He never could understand people's obsession with vehicles. Rather than owning a piece of metal someone called a Mustang, he would rather own the horse that was flesh and blood.

He scanned the area as they got out of the car. It wasn’t quite time for stores to start opening, so the streets weren’t busy yet. He really didn’t think anyone would try something since they were parked right outside the police station. He’d discovered a long time ago you could never tell what someone might do. People could be pretty stupid.

Quinn was meeting them here. The police captain had given him an office to work out of since he was heading up the investigation into the kidnapping. When they went inside, Johnny told the desk sergeant who they were, and that they were meeting the FBI agent.

The desk sergeant held up one finger, then picked up the phone on this desk. He spoke into it a moment, then turned back to them. “Fourth door on the left.” He turned his attention back to the stack of paperwork on his desk.

Quinn was already holding the door open for them as they went down the hall. “Good morning. Can I offer you something? Coffee? Water?”

They both declined.

“I think I’d just like to get started. The sooner I can identify the men who kidnapped me, the sooner they’ll be behind bars.”

Quinn nodded. “Then let’s get started.” He motioned for them to go across the hall and then opened that door. “I have a computer set up in here. My team and I narrowed the suspects down as much as we could to men with the name of Angus. I figured that would be easier. I’m afraid there were more than I realized, though. I tried to break it down by approximate age range, but I’m afraid you still have to look at quite a few mugshots.”

She squared her shoulders. “I’ll do whatever it takes to bring the two men to justice, and hopefully find out who hired them.
