Chapter Sixteen

Haunted Dreams, Magic Discovered—Things May Not Be as They Appear

Letting the door whoosh shut behind him, Brock waved to the security guard and made his way through the vet clinic. The first rays of sun filtered through the windows and spread across the clinic’s in-patient room floor. Sipping his coffee, he climbed on the stool in front of the owl’s enclosure. “Well, today’s the day Lucky.” The bird fixed its yellow eyes on him, ruffled its feathers as best it could, and flipped it’s one relatively good wing.

Last night, he’d called the trucker and told him that the bird would be moving to her permanent home at Salem Sanctuary today. The transport enclosure was ready. Lucky had gulped down breakfast and now blinked more slowly.

Tempted to get the owl out and into her travel cage, he reconsidered. It would be best to wait for Pepper and Gwen to arrive with their calming and telepathic talents. Less stress on the bird knowing what was going to happen. While he’d learned to communicate with the animals in his care, he couldn’t hold a candle to Gwen’s abilities.

Gypsy magic, that’s what Pepper called it. She would know. He remembered well the scathing discussion she’d directed at him when he refused to believe he could communicate with the animals as well as she could. Still, he’d learned a lot from Pepper and Gwen.

Turning his phone over in his pocket, he glanced at the clock. Not enough time to call, Dylan, his sister in Lobster Cove. Never enough time. Did she have the same latent talent he did? Was she aware of Gypsy magic? Witnessing first hand her ability to calm injured creatures when he’d assisted in her veterinary clinic last year during the holidays. He smiled. The same holidays he’d met Gwen and discovered magic. At that time, it never occurred to him there was more to it than just understanding animal behavior and body language. Now a whole lot of things were different.

Deep in thought, he finished the coffee picked up on the way in this morning and absently tossed the cup in the trash. A clanking sound brought his attention to the bird. Big yellow eyes stared at him unblinking. The owl grabbed the enclosure door with its beak and rattled it back and forth.

“You ready to get out?” When he reached for the gate, outside the sound of an engine and crunch of tires rolling to a stop in front of the clinic diverted his attention.

“Gwen and company are here,” the security guard’s voice echoed down the empty hall. Wouldn’t he ever learn to use the intercom? He reached over and tapped the intercom button. “Thanks. Let them in.”

“Will do.” Again the words bounced off the walls. The security guard’s chair groaned when he got up and his rubber-soled shoes squeaked on the floor as he made his way to the door. Jangling keys and the click of a lock preceded his greeting.

Brock shook his head and glanced back at the owl.
