Chapter 15

I woke up the next morning with Justice’s arms still around me. I squirmed a little bit, still getting used to the sensation. I still hadn’t decided how I felt about Justice, and I wished that I’d slept with Fenris instead, but I couldn’t find it in myself to be irritated at him for it.

He tightened his grip on me. “Good morning, gorgeous,” he muttered. “I had a dream for the first time.”

I blushed when he called me that and shifted so I could sit up, stirring Ari who was still asleep beside me. “Yeah? That’s wonderful, Justice. What did you dream about?”

“I dreamt that you were being trapped by pirates,” he muttered sleepily. He was about to learn that the worst part of sleep was usually waking up.

I chuckled and patted his arm. “Go back to sleep. I’m going to shower.”

“I’ll come,” he muttered, starting to roll over.

“No, no,” I said quickly. “You stay here. Showers are a private thing.”

“Okay.” He yawned and rolled over so he was on his stomach. I smiled to myself. It was a pretty sweet thing, actually. If I’d spent my life never sleeping, never dreaming, just… hiding somewhere while I watched these humans get to live wonderful lives, I’d probably be overjoyed to cross into the living world as well.

I showered, then put on a set of baby blue leggings and a sports bra, followed by a white tank top over it and a matching sweater. When I came out, Justice was sitting up and rubbing his eyes.

“My eyes feel weird,” he muttered.

Delia was already awake and waiting for the shower. “Yeah, hon. That’s what happens when you don’t get enough sleep.”

“How much sleep do I need?” Justice yawned.

“We typically need eight hours,” I answered. “We got about eight hours last night, but your body probably just isn’t used to it yet. You can go back to sleep though.”

“No.” He shook his head and sighed. “No, I’m going to come with you to class.”

I frowned when he said that, setting my sleeping clothes in my dirty hamper. “Justice, I’m not opposed to you staying here, but you can’t follow me to class. If anyone walks into you or through you… I can’t protect you from a school of monster hunters, and it’s important to me that nothing happens to you.”

When I said that, he smiled at me. “Really?”

“Yes,” I nodded. “I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if something happened.”

He relaxed a bit and nodded. “I’ll stay here then.”

“Alright.” I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. The idea of him following me around all day and being in danger made me anxious.

And I learned about an hour later when Monsters 101 started, that I was anxious anyway, so I might have just self-destructed if he’d actually been following me around.

When I was just with Delia, I had a partner in crime. She was the one who technically brought Justice into the world, not that I’d have thrown her under the bus, but still.
