Chapter Fourteen

Needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep that night. I was a social pariah in Ouroboros, and nothing I could do would change it. Even if Stheno finished her investigation and miraculously found me not guilty, if she found some evidence Euryale had returned to the academy again, everyone would still hate me. Deep down, they’d always believe it was me.

I couldn’t blame them. It wasn’t like I had any evidence to support my claim that it wasn’t me. I wouldn’t go so far as to say their hatred for me was justified, but…well, who else were they going to hate? They’d lost a fellow student, a friend.

I mostly kept to myself, wearing the same pajama clothes I’d worn the day before. I wasn’t exactly hungry, but I figured I might as well try to eat, so the next day during lunch, I made my way to the kitchen, where I could choose what I wanted. The satyrs in the kitchen eyed me warily, their ears perked and shoulders tense. They wore shirts and nothing else, for their bottom halves were mostly goat.

I was about to pick up a salad bowl when one of the satyrs jerked the cart away from me, causing me to jump back in alarm. Another satyr offered me a different salad bowl and a fork, and when I took it, I saw that on top of the lettuce and carrots and dressing were half a dozen wormy, wriggling maggots.

Great. Even the satyrs thought I did it.

I could’ve fought them over it, but I didn’t have the energy. I smiled, said “Thanks,” and turned to exit the kitchen. I went outside, pausing when I spotted a group of students lounging near the doors on the grass. They had meals that were maggot-free, I assumed, and a part of me was jealous. No one else was being treated this way. Just me.

Just Medusa. The freak no one liked.

Heaving a great sigh, I walked across the long field that spread before the academy, plopping myself down half a mile out, just outside the line of trees that would make my golden wrist bangle shock me from here to Hell. I picked out the maggots and set them in the grass, frowning into the bowl.

The maggots were sprinkled on after the salad was made, but still. Totally unappetizing.

I set the bowl down, bringing my knees to my chest. I closed my eyes, wanting to wish this all away, wanting Mary to be back and alive. Stheno had taken her body to the gods. I had no idea how much longer I’d have to live as an outcast, but a part of me just wanted to get it over with already. I knew what was coming. I’d be found guilty and be sentenced to death or some godly, extreme form of torture. Like, stop dragging it out. Just bring it, already.

That wasn’t to say I was ready to die or spend the next seventy years being cut up and sewn back together.
