Elsewhere:

She bounced her knee nervously, eyeing the congregation solemnly. Normally, she was much better at hiding herself at these things. As it was, she was becoming frantic.

The group wasn’t large. It never was. Nobody wanted to draw undo attention to themselves. Not about this. If they were caught, punishment was imminent. What they’d suffer would be nothing short of a bloody massacre not even fit for viewing on the Dark Web. Things would be done to them that would cause Katherine Knight to shudder with revulsion.

“Where is he?” Their ringleader grumbled and shuffled on his loafer-clad feet.

“He said he’d be here. Maybe he got waylaid or something.” The youngish blonde chewed her thumbnail – a deplorable habit, really. Her eyes shifted from side to side, surveying their relatively innocuous surroundings; a rarely-used walking trail at the edge of the city. Nobody had been through for an hour. The last had been an elderly woman puttering along with her Pomeranian. “Shit, I really need to get back. Idris is supposed to leave by four to pick up his grandbrat.”

“Don’t be a cunt,” another man hissed to the blonde. “Besides, it ain’t gonna matter if you’re late back to the pomps, anyway. You already fucked up once. He’ll flay your ass if you do it again and I, for one, would love to see it happen.”

“Hey! You wouldn’t have even got a hit if it wasn’t for me. Fucking windbags. None of y’all can walk the walk, but you sure like to talk the talk. Why not stick your neck out for once!”

“Shh!” Their leader waved a thick hand, his nails sharper than they should have been. His dark eyes squinted as he stared off into the thicket. “Someone’s coming.”

For her part, she couldn’t hear or see what the male did. She was as Normal as Normal could get. She wasn’t special. She wasn’t anyone important. She knew, though, that something was inherently wrong with this group of beings. She’d overheard the blonde and the third, so-far silent man muttering when she transferred out for her first job. They’d been talking about her.

She hadn’t known Adeline Rimbauer long. Not long at all. The other woman, though, was a good person. Genuinely good. She also was one of the few people that put up with her shit – tolerated the mask she threw on with aplomb – and took it in stride. Adeline gave off a vibe of regality, but also companionship and loyalty. She roused urges in her that she’d never felt before in her narcissistic life.

Adeline didn’t deserve what others were aiming to do to her. And, somehow, she was going to help stop it.

“You have better news for me, I hope,” came the disembodied voice in the trees. She shivered, hating his cruel tone. She’d met him only once before and hated him even more than she hated the dapper-dressed wolf serving as chairman to their team.

That was saying something big since the aged Shapeshifter made her alternately want to spit acid in his eyes and slit him from groin to sternum.
