CHAPTER SIX

"I am fine, Gregory." Matt nodded to his primary protection agent, before he sat down at the Winery 99 Restaurant. "I would like us to have plenty of space this afternoon." His security team made Georgia nervous, so he didn't want them looming around, ruining his second chance.

"Raja?" Gregory frowned at his king in genuine concern. Samad's accident happened years ago, but for everyone close to him, it stayed near the surface.

Matt put a hand on his trusted friend's shoulder. "I will be right here. You can loom over us from the table just there." He nodded at the elegantly set table beside them. "And follow at a respectful distance, at least fifty-feet if she agrees to tour the winery with me."

Gregory scowled, but nodded before he sat down at the table behind Matt.

Matt looked over the balcony, then out the window at the expansive vineyard, raising an eyebrow at the hockey rink set among the last row of vines at the stone patio.

"The owner likes to play a bit of shinny when he's here with his buddies." The server said as she poured water into his crystal glass.

"Shinny?" Matt questioned.

"Yes. Pond hockey. A pickup game, like street hockey but on the ice." She smiled and looked out the window. "Sometimes the kids come out and play. My son loves it."

"The owner does not mind?"

"Definitely no. He encourages them. It's how he got his start, playing on a backyard pond with his own dad." She nodded to one of the many full-size wall photos of the famous owner's life in professional hockey, dressed in his gear, dominating other players on the ice, scoring goals and celebrating game wins with his teammates. Beside the largest photo of him, with a shiny silver cup over his head, was an equally huge black-and-white picture of him as a young boy with his father. They were playing on a homemade rink in what looked to be a farmer's field.

Matt smiled at the big, toothy grin on the owner's youthful face. "Is the owner available today?"

The server shook her head. "He lives in Los Angeles now." She took a pad out of her pocket. "Can I get you anything while you wait?"

Matt reluctantly dragged his gaze away from the father and son photos. "A bottle of your best Riesling ice wine."

The server nodded and disappeared.

"I'm sorry I'm late." Georgia's breathless voice breezed in as she hurried to the table in a flurry of bright color. "They don't have Uber her yet."

He immediately stood and reached for her hands before she sat. "It is fine. I have not been here long." He kissed both of her cheeks, a warm rush of heightened sensation washing through his body.

"Oh good. Sometimes it takes time to get Putera settled."

Matt smiled. "I can imagine. Samad was the same way."

Georgia leaned forward. "Really? I couldn't help wondering all night about how you said your first son was similar. Was he ever diagnosed on the autism spectrum?"
