Cindy awoke to darkness. At first, she could not quite make out where she was, but slowly, ever so slowly, the details of her surroundings revealed themselves. She was lying on the sofa in Chase’s apartment.

How did I get here? she wondered. She sat up sluggishly, still feeling a bit groggy from… whatever it was that had put her out. Cindy pushed herself up to a sitting position, placing a hand on her forehead as she tried to gain an assessment of her condition. Remarkably, she felt surprisingly good, given the circumstances. Still a bit woozy but no hangover effects or any general unpleasantness. If anything, she felt a bit light and floaty.

“There you are.” Chase stepped out from the kitchen area. “How are you feeling?”

“How did I get here?” Cindy replied, ignoring his question.

“I ran into you out on the hiking trail, remember?”

Cindy squinted. Yes, she had gone hiking. She did remember that, and she had seen Chase. They came back here for a drink, maybe more. That made sense. Of course, that’s what happened. What else could it have been?

“Here,” Chase handed her a glass of ice water. “Drink this.”

She sipped at the water, still searching her mind. “Did we−?”

“Not this time,” Chase replied with a smirk. “We had a few drinks. You passed out. I’m not that guy.”

“Wait a second,” Cindy blurted with sudden clarity. “I was drugged.”

Chase’s surprised expression confirmed her statement. “Well, yes… But only mildly. You’ve only been out for a few hours.”

“Yeah. Figures. I’ve always been able to hold my liquor, you know. But why?” She glared at him, waiting for an answer.

“Uh… Cindy, do you remember the conversation we had in the woods?”

“Conversation…?” Cindy searched her mind, still a bit woozy from the effects of whatever it was coursing through her system.

The details remained foggy, but she began to pick up on something, like finding a lost puzzle piece underneath the table. Very suddenly, the image of Chase transforming into a bear in the center of the pastoral clearing appeared. She remembered running into the forest to find the lockbox, and she remembered coming back here.

“Conversation,” she said once more. “In the forest. Right. Yes, Chase, I remember. I remember everything! I remember you turning into a giant bear. What the fuck!?”

“Ah…” Chase squirmed, looking her over intently. “You remember that, do you?”

“I don’t like being manipulated like that,” Cindy said, glaring at Chase.

“You don’t like not being in control,” Chase replied.

“Oh, you’re one to talk.” Cindy stood up, picking up her purse and looking for her keys. “Apparently, the world as I know it is not a thing right now. What’s next? Witches? Vampires? Unicorns?”

Chase chuckled. “Unicorns? No, that would be absurd.”

“I don’t know how this stuff works!” Cindy snapped. “You know what? I’m leaving. I’m going home. I’ll see you around, Chase.”

She vanished out the door without another word. Chase sat there for a long while, just looking at the closed door. She had resisted the memory drug, which was unusual for a mortal.
