Fern

“We’ll keep her here for now.”

The slimy voice Fern had heard giving orders spoke again as she was thrown unceremoniously to a hard floor. Cold immediately began to seep up from it and into her bones. The blindfold tied tightly around her eyes kept her from seeing anything of her surroundings. Where had they taken her?

“Keep a good watch on her,” the nasty voice commanded.

“We should have got Pryor to let us put her in the jailhouse,” another voice said.

“And let that fucking idiot Sheriff Watts get wind of this? You gotta be kidding. He ain’t one of our boys.” The words hit like an electric shock. Aelon had told her that the Police were involved, but she was relieved that at least the Sheriff was clean.

“Maybe, but still…”

“But still, nothing,” the first voice snapped again. “I ain’t having Watts find out shit. Now you just keep her here. I’ll be back with Sergei soon, and then we’ll get what we need from the bitch.”

Fern held back a whimper as footsteps moved away from her. Then they paused and suddenly came back. She sensed someone standing in front of her. Terror shot through her, but she set her teeth in determination. Was whoever loomed over her close enough to kick?

That idea fell away as the blindfold was ripped off her face. The rough fabric abraded her temples as it was torn from her head. Fern blinked, her eyes adjusting to the fluorescent light from a single bulb overhead. Then she focused on the sneering face in front of her.

“Before I leave, I want you to know what’s in store for you,” said the man, crouching down. His crooked nose and watery blue eyes came way too close for comfort. Fern swallowed, trying to work up enough saliva so she could spit at him.

“We have an… interrogator here,” the creep continued. “Skilled at breaking the will of men far stronger than you. To get answers, he will peel your skin from your bones inch by inch if he has to.”

“Answers about what? What the hell is going on?” Fern squared her shoulders and forced herself to look the bastard in the eye. If she gave in to fear now, she’d be nothing but a gibbering mass on the floor.

“What you know about us,” hissed the man. “And…” He smiled the kind of smile that made Fern want to take a bath. “What exactly is going on between you and that man you’ve been seen with.”

“I’m not telling you anything,” spat Fern, a strange fury rising in her at the Dragon slayers bringing up Aelon.

“Perhaps not,” mused the man, rising from his crouch. “But you will tell Sergei. When he crushes your fingers, I doubt you will remain silent. So think on that while I’m gone.”

The two heavyset goons at the door chuckled as their leader passed them. The moment he was gone, they locked the door. The bolt sliding home made a thud that felt like a death knell to Fern.

“Filth,” said the first guard, almost lazily.
