Chapter Thirteen

I was getting really fucking sick of everybody in town knowing all my personal business-except me, of course. I watched in silent fury as Chandra popped open the salt with her fake, sharp nails and started drawing a circle around me.

She was that kind of hotness that screamed trash, tramp stamp and all, always smelling like cheap summer lotion, weed and sex. Kyle watched her like a lion stalking a juicy deer as she put on her little show. I was grateful she was distracting so I could keep working at my bonds.

Her hip swung close to me and it took everything I had not to whip my leg out and kick her right in her stripped down, tattooed coochie. I spied dampness running down her leg and suppressed a gag. Definitely didn’t want that on my foot.

Also I didn’t want to spoil the surprise I had in store for them. They somehow managed to miss that one of my feet were free. Guess that’s what a lifetime of smoking meth for breakfast does to your attention to detail.

She drew another circle in front of me, the two circles overlapping where Kyle stood. He didn’t do jack shit except watch her as his dick got hard. I dared to ask Chandra, “What did you mean, my grandma did me wrong?”

Kyle barely seemed to hear me talk, so intent was he on watching his trashy girlfriend shake salt out in glyphs in the opposite circle. “Christ, you’re ignorant,” she said as her ass swung back around to Kyle. “We’re trying to rip power out of you so we can use it to challenge Prudence, who wants to be the new leader since Mallory’s gone. It’s a time of power transition, honey, and we’re all trying to grab the golden ring.”

Chills crept up my spine hard and fast. My wild guess that my grandma had been the cult leader was right. Was it? Did I trust Chandra to tell the truth? But why would she lie? It was obvious that this was a deep spell she was going to perform, one that ended in my death.

I spied a huge knife on a box nearby. A dull, rusty one from what I could see by candle light.

Air froze in my lungs as the full seriousness of this hit me.

Nope. I’m not going down like that.

I forced out a sentence to distract me from how terrible that blade would feel hacking at skin. “I don’t know what in the actual fuck you’re talking about. I don’t have any powers. Everyone knows I’m the worst witch in town. Lost what little powers I had when I went to New York. Haven’t been able to even do an easy illusion.”

My breathing was growing shallower and quicker. I was losing it.

Chandra kept shaking salt, her cheeks jiggling to the motion. Kyle slid his hand over her back and down the curve of her hip, turning with her, his eyes wide and bloodshot as they met mine.

She straightened up.
