Slowly opening her eyes, Aspen blinked hard against the morning sunlight that streamed through the shades and shut them again. She rolled over, away from the window, but her stomach turned in the opposite direction. She steadied her breathing, waiting for the nausea to pass.

It was that damn pizza. She’d eaten way too much of it, but she’d been so ravenous. She’d had a couple of slices, planning to put the rest of it away for the next day, but before she knew it, she’d devoured half of it. Of course, the coming winter wasn’t helping. Her inner bear somehow still thought she needed to prepare for hibernation, it seemed.

But right now, she couldn’t soothe her stomach. No matter how still she lay or how much she tried to calm herself down, it wouldn’t go away. Aspen slowly sat up, preparing to stagger into the kitchen to find some crackers, but she realized she wasn’t even going to make it. She launched herself toward the bathroom and threw herself at the toilet just in time, the porcelain cold under her hands as she emptied what little she had.

The linen cabinet in the bathroom was, thankfully, close by. Aspen grabbed a washcloth and soaked it in cold water, reveling in the feel of it on her face and mouth. When had she gotten so hot? Could the pizza have given her food poisoning?

After a minute or two, she felt completely fine. Aspen turned on the shower and stepped under the water, thinking hard as she lathered her hair. This wasn’t the first morning she’d felt ill. In fact, she’d felt like crap for the last several days. It always started out at its worst when she first woke up, and it went away over the course of the day. Then there was her lack of energy, and the fact that she couldn’t seem to control her body temperature. She was always too cold or too hot.

It’s fine, she told herself as she stepped out and toweled off. It’s all in my head, but that’s perfectly reasonable. I’ve been stressed out lately. I’ve left everything behind and moved without notice. I’ve started a new job. I knew Gage was following me, and I had to deal with him. Now I’ve got this Jesse thing on my hands. Of course I’m going to freak out a little.

Aspen dragged a brush through her thick locks as she once again thought about Jesse. She’d picked up her phone with the thought of texting him about fifty times the day before. At one point, she’d even drafted a message, but she’d never hit send. How could she send him some inane note asking him how he was doing? It just seemed so ridiculous considering everything else they had going on between them, even though she didn’t know how to pin it down.

A second wave of nausea hit her as she brushed her teeth. Aspen braced herself on the bathroom counter and waited for it to pass. Shit.
