Chapter 13

I’m not sure how long I’m on my knees for, but long enough to feel the cold seep back in and undo all the warmth I’d felt amongst my men.

Tris. I’ve failed her.

“Come on, Cookie. We need to move. It’s not safe out here in the open,” Maro says, his hand resting on my shoulder.

“It’s not safe anywhere,” I snap. “I’m too fucking late.”

“No. Tris is here, you can still help her, Firecracker. She might not be the child that was taken from you, but I’m betting she’s as strong as you are. No human survives in Hell, yet she has and so have you. That has to be worth something,” Ceb says seriously. He hauls me to my feet, not giving me any choice but to keep moving.

Plutus looks at me sternly. “They’re both right. Staying out here isn’t an option, and giving up isn’t either. You came to rescue your sister, and that’s what you’re going to do.”

Then it hits me. How could I be so stupid! “The woman who came to me, that was… that was Tris!” I blurt out, my eyes wide as realisation dawns.

“I had a feeling,” Maro begins, but I cut him off.

“She’s been with me all this time, helping me, us!”

“It would appear so,” Ceb responds. “She must have some powerful allies in Hell.”

“If she’s as incredible as you, I’m pretty sure she’ll be able to charm even the darkest of hearts,” Plutus agrees with a slanted grin.

“Lucifer? Do you think she might’ve…” I question, hopefully.

“Not a chance. Nope, he doesn’t love. He’s incapable,” Maro confirms.

“But who then?” I frown, trying to remember who I’d seen in my vision… if that’s what you call it. “The man with the grey hair…”

“Fenrir,” Ceb confirms.

Maro and Plutus both gape at Ceb. “Fenrir?” they say in unison.

“Fuck me,” Plutus mumbles.

Maro just remains opened mouthed. He notices me staring and shuts it.

“Then somehow we ask him for help. Get a message to him? Maybe he can get us inside?”

“How?” Maro asks.

“I’m not sure Fenrir will do anything unless it’s to his advantage,” Plutus says as we continue onwards.

The cold is making my teeth chatter once more, and Ceb places an arm around me.

“He must’ve had good enough reason to help us before…” he muses. The warmth of his body heat eases the deathly cold I feel.

“I bet…” Plutus mumbles, side-eying me.

“What? Spit it out,” I say, knowing that I’m not going to like the reason why this grey-haired Fenrir decided to help us. I’m pretty certain I know what he’s going to say, but even so, I don’t bloody like it. This must be what it feels like to be a mother who’s worried about the bad boys all young girls seem to be drawn to. Then I look about me and realise I’m that girl too. Christ.

“Let’s just say he’s partial to a beautiful young woman…”

My stomach flips a little, actually, a lot at that. “She’s just a child…”

“Not anymore, Cookie,” Maro reminds me.

“Well, fuck!” I exclaim.
