Chapter Twenty-Seven

I wrenched my arm back again, and this time, he let me go. The momentum almost sent me toppling right off the stool and onto the floor. I turned my hard gaze on him and stared until his smile dipped. The harpies were no joking matter.

“Just don’t go near one, Finley,” I told him firmly. “That’s my only advice. Don’t go out after dark, and you’ll survive the harpies. Don’t take the risk.”

He gaped at me. He ran his hand through his thick mop of curls, and I watched as his throat bob, like I had crushed all his plans.

A sharp kick moved the stool out of the way, and I brushed at the drops of cider that had landed on my leg. Finley’s hand flapped, as if he was trying to mentally put something back together.

When I stepped back, he looked up sharply. “You still have a question.”

I paused and fidgeted with the thin pieces of wire wrapped around my fingers. Although I hadn’t recounted the experience with the harpy, all I could imagine was its ashen skin, the sharp points on its wings, and the way its claws had raked through Monika’s skin like it was nothing more than wet tissue.

I felt too frazzled, dizzy, and out of sorts to put together a proper question. I wanted to craft the perfect question, give the perfect details to walk into their team and snatch up a piece of victory from right beneath their noses. When it was gone, Finley would know, he would know it was me.

He would know he had led me to this point.

But right then, I couldn’t remember how to breathe properly, let alone how to work out what I needed from him.

My voice trembled as I finally asked, “Who has the piece?”

He didn’t even blink. Finley screwed up his lips but answered. “Nash, of course. Who else?”
