Chapter 22

Riding in a carriage with Lord Raidon, Mistress Ferna, Miss Hala, Mister Aron and Sal was a much different experience than my trip to Balret Manor with Lord Salor had been. I’d known it would be, but that had been my only previous experience in a carriage, and the contrast was remarkable.

Miss Hala, Mister Aron and Sal were quiet at first, unsure if Mistress Ferna would insist on the proper master/servant decorum during the trip, but she worked to draw them out and soon had them relaxed and chatting. Or as relaxed as we could be in a moving carriage. My memories of how bumpy the ride was had, sadly enough, not been exaggerated. I now understood why broken axles were such a common problem. The roads were not in very good condition. When I innocently asked if the carriage had springs (the most desirable carriages in the historical romances I’d read always included the phrase ‘well sprung’) everyone looked at me like I was crazy, so apparently they had not developed that technology. My poor ass. It was already sore from our morning sex yesterday and the long day and a half of riding; the shuddering carriage ride just completed the trifecta of misery.

We talked as much to distract ourselves from the journey as to converse, but it was with real concern that Lord Raidon asked Mistress Ferna how she could possibly take time off from work to come with them. “You’re not going to lose your position, are you?” he asked.

She waved his concern away. “Not at all,” she said. “The children I’m tutoring now are just old enough to be left without direct supervision for the summer, but are not so old that a summer spent playing and riding their horses will adversely impact their education. My employers were most understanding of my need to address a family crisis. Besides,” she added, “I am one of the most highly recommended governesses there are for young lords and ladies. They wouldn’t want to lose me.”

I remembered Miss Hala’s story about the three job offers Mistress Ferna had turned down to teach Lord Raidon, not surprised at her confidence. Someone who had been selected to teach a Ducal Heir must be at the top of her field. Talk soon turned to other things, and our journey continued its painfully slow, bumpy way to the capitol.

Despite our fears the trip was relatively uneventful. Lord Salor never caught up to us. The most exciting thing that happened, besides the changing view outside the window, was meeting other young lords and ladies who were also heading to the capitol. It turned out there was a second exam for young ladies, similar to the Governorship Exam but with household management replacing the requirement to study war. They were not required to take the exam unless they were the heirs to their estates (yes, girls could inherit here, though only if they had no brothers), but a passing grade would be a requirement if they wanted to be able to act as regent for their children in the event they were widowed.
