Chapter Thirteen

Remi

The Jeep bounced and the brakes squealed as we pulled into the parking lot of a motel. We had one more day of driving, and this was one more place for shit to go sideways.

My breath caught in my chest as I stared at the bright lights inside the reception area. This place was busier than the last place. Cars filled the parking lot. There was a restaurant attached to the same building as the office, filled with patrons eating and drinking.

This wasn’t a place for me, not now…maybe not ever.

I lifted my gaze to the lights that illuminated the paved parking lot as Knox pulled up hard and switched off the car. He turned his head, took one look at Lucien in the passenger’s seat and mumbled, “I’ll get us some rooms.”

“We need to keep going,” Melkor muttered beside me and leaned forward. “We don’t have time to stop.”

“We’re not going anywhere. I need to sleep, and you’re in no condition to drive,” the Angel snarled.

Anger filled the car, dark and brooding. The standoff lasted for a second before the Hellhound fell against the seat once more. “Just a few hours, and then we’re back on the road. I have to find her. I have to…”

Knox never answered, just shoved open the door and pushed it to slam behind him. I flinched at the boom and felt the darkness shift inside me.

She was quiet…that bitch inside me.

And that was never a good thing.

I shifted my gaze to the dark outline of Lucien in the front seat. He’d stopped whimpering and moaning, instead, soft snores echoed as he slept.

It was a good thing, I’d rather he be out of it, than in pain. But it didn’t change what I did, and it didn’t forgive the horror of the unknown.

I clenched my fist, unable to shake that sickening feeling of his heart pulsing against my knuckles. I didn’t remember hurting him. All I remembered was the squeal of the tires and the panic. I remember flying forward, until the seatbelt snapped against the base of my neck, choking me. Lucien had been there, driving me back against the seat, protecting me with his own body, until I looked down…

I hurt him.

I hurt him in ways I didn’t even understand.

I glanced at the floor of the car, and the long white feathers that had fallen from the tips of his wings. Feathers Michael was trying to hide. Knox yanked open the door and strode into the brightly lit office, disappearing behind the blinds.

Michael glanced toward me for a second and then yanked the handle and shouldered open the door. Night air rushed in, closing in around me before he closed the door once more.

“Are we there?” Lucien murmured from the front.

“No, not yet,” I murmured, the sound of his voice echoing all the way into my bones. “We’re stopping for the night.”

A surge of power rushed through my veins with the sound. Heat flared, sliding through my body to well between my thighs.
