Hillary

Not a clue what I’d expected when I walked into Every Woman’s Fairy Godmother.

Probably not for Madeleine to treat me as if nothing had changed.

I also hadn’t expected her to tackle the topic straight on.

“Hey. I’m your fairy godmother. Have any wishes today?”

But what actually unfolded the moment I stepped through the door? Nope. Wouldn’t have guessed that in a million years.

The entire place shut down like a prison on lockdown.

As I stood just inside the front door, frozen by the sound of a lock clicking into place, my astonishment only grew. After the lock turned on its own, shutters I’d swear hadn’t been there when I walked into the shop closed with a resounding bang, barring the windows. And then some unseen force pulled the blind down on the glass front door.

Maybe I should have paid more attention to Walter and Brad’s concerns.

“Madeleine.” I should probably have removed the grump from my grumpy tone, given that she had mystical, hands-free door-locking skills, but I didn’t. I crossed my arms and cocked a hip.

My patience was pretty thin, and who could blame me? I’d had a trying few days, and I hadn’t slept fabulously well. Someone—a very hot guy—had invaded my dreams. And no, they were not PG.

“Don’t be such a spoilsport. This is where I wow you with my mad magical skills.” She wore the same welcoming smile she always did, which was comforting in the circumstances.

“Yanking my friend from the edge of oblivion already did that.”

“Ah. Your friend.” She bit her lip as if she was considering my response, then, after a few beats, smiled. “That’s a solid argument. Either way, we needed a little privacy for this conversation. I just added a few touches for dramatic effect.”

She clasped her hands in front of her and looked at me expectantly, eagerly.

Something was up. I should be looking at her expectantly. I was the one who needed answers. Why was she looking at me like I held all the cards?

“So?” She bounced on her toes. I cocked my head and held silent. She prompted me again. “What do you think?”

There were so many answers to that question. So, so many. “About my grandfather’s imaginary friend being real? About the fact that curses really exist? Or fairy godmothers? Or about the illegal detainment of your best client?” And that was just the tip of the iceberg.

“Oh.” Madeleine deflated slightly. The bouncing stopped, in any event. “Well, that’s anticlimactic.”

“On what topic should I be expressing an opinion?”

She clapped her hands together like an excited child or perhaps a very enthusiastic cheerleader. And that was another reason I’d previously found her age so confusing: sometimes she seemed so mature, and others…less so.

“True love!”

Yep, today Madeleine was leaning a little more toward youthful. True love? Where did that come from? Maybe she’d just watched The Princess Bride. It was a pretty amazing movie.

I hated to burst her bubble, but… “There’s a lot going on in my life right now. Romance isn’t on my radar.
