It wasn’t just a storm. It was a storm raging its guts out above a dark and roiling sea. #ShowingOff

We rocketed downward, screaming, and a few sickening seconds later, plunged feetfirst into the surging water. Instantly, I remembered whose weakness was water, but just because water didn’t make it to my top-ten list of freak-out causes didn’t mean I was doing much better.

My experience with swimming had been limited to inflatable backyard pools and the occasional ignominy of a city pool forced on me by well-meaning foster parents. Nobody had taken the time to teach me how to swim, and nobody had wanted to spend the money for lessons, for which I didn’t begrudge them. I lived in inner-city Boston, where the summers were brief if occasionally brutal, and the winters long and harsh. There wasn’t much call for swimsuits.

Now I did my best approximation of a full-body spasm as I tried to propel myself back up toward the surface of the crashing ocean. Midflail, I connected with something hard, and I opened my eyes wide, recognizing the pale-blond gorgeousness of Marcus. He couldn’t get anywhere near me, however, given the way my hands were churning and my feet kicking out.

My anxiety built. I knew I needed to relax, to calm down and let him help me, but I was too terrified. My lungs burned with the effort of not taking a breath. I couldn’t even see Luke, who actually deserved this test, and here I was stealing his thunder by being more impossibly pitiful than he could be on his worst day.

The sudden urge to laugh erupted within me, compromised by the lack of oxygen, and I twisted around in the water, desperately trying to locate the other guys. Taking advantage of my momentary distraction, Marcus surged forward and grabbed me beneath the arms, kicking powerfully upward.

I’d like to say that I had the presence of mind not to try to stall out his life-saving efforts, but the reality was I was stunned into inertia by the current of electricity that flowed through me at his touch. Arguably, electricity should kill me in this much water. Instead, it felt like a net of safety was spreading through my entire body, lifting me up, easing my fear, bringing me to a place of utter and complete rightness.

When we finally broke the surface of the water a few seconds later, though, I realized our circumstances had not significantly improved. I could see Rafe and Connor manhandling Luke, while Marcus did his level best to keep me from drowning, but the storm exploded over us and the waves rose and fell with sickening intensity. No sooner had I gasped my first breath, than my mouth was filled with water again. I choked, half retching, half coughing. I tried to clear my lungs, shocked at the immensity of the water, the frigid iciness of its slap, the raging violence. It was all too much!

“Relax,” Marcus ordered, his words ringing not in my ears but in my mind.
