Chapter Thirty-Two

After quietly closing the front door, Mavis hurried to the girls waiting to walk together up to the big house. They had left Samantha sitting close by Craigston’s side. She’d assured them she’d prefer to be alone to see to his needs. The night was cloudless, with a multitude of stars twinkling above. Mavis gathered her shawl more closely around her shoulders and met the quiet group by the glowing embers of the campfire. The somber mood drifted around them like a wisp of smoke. No one seemed to be in a hurry to get home.

A far-off coyote lamented his plight, and soon an answering howl echoed from a different direction.

“Nothing is ever as it seems,” Lavinia whispered. “I can’t believe Mr. Clark is dying. How tragic. I remember my shameful thoughts when I first met them, thinking Samantha a gold digger. I’m mortified with myself.”

“I know how you feel,” Belle agreed, wrapping one arm around Lavinia’s waist. “Don’t be too hard on yourself, because I thought the very same thing. I think we all did. Judge not, says the Lord, lest ye be judged. I should keep that in mind.”

Seeing the closeness between Belle and Lavinia, Mavis longed to reach out to Katie. She and her youngest sister had been dancing around each other for two days. Would Katie ever forgive her? Everything felt wrong and off-balance.

“Life is unpredictable,” Katie mumbled. “Tomorrow is never a given.”

Belle shifted in the darkness. “So true, Katie. And nothing is more important than family. The future doesn’t come with guarantees, as much as we’d like to hope.”

Mavis was sure her sister didn’t realize she’d run her hand down the flat front of her skirt. Belle hadn’t voiced it, but she must be a little concerned she’d yet to conceive. She and Blake had been married over seven months now. In the weeks following their wedding, Belle had shared her delight with the sisters about becoming pregnant and having Blake’s child. But as the weeks turned into months, her excitement had diminished until the topic faded away.

“I feel so badly for Samantha,” Katie said. “I wonder what she’ll do after…”

More coyotes joined in the serenade, creating an otherworldly chorus. The sound always brought a melancholy ache to Mavis’s heart. The rest of the ranch was dark and quiet.

Lavinia straightened. “I guess we should get to bed. Tomorrow will arrive, and we don’t know what’s in store. We need to be rested and ready to face a difficult day. Samantha and Mr. Clark will need us.”
