WHY DO BLACK WOMEN FACE WORSE MATERNAL OUTCOMES?

There are many reasons and these reasons are complex, such as healthcare access and poor quality of care. One of those reasons include the undervaluing of Black women and their experiences. They are not monitored as closely as their White counterparts, and when they do call attention to issues, these tend to be dismissed. One of the famous examples is the world-renowned tennis player Serena Williams. After giving birth to her daughter, she experienced a pulmonary embolism. Recognizing what she was experiencing, she alerted her medical team but was immediately dismissed. After continuing to press her medical team for immediate diagnosis and scan, the CT scan revealed several clots in her lungs. Ms. Williams continues to advocate to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality, especially among Black women.
