The kiss was marvelous, and Rikar was glad he’d taken this risk. He wasn’t sure where he and Hayes stood when it came to their relationship, and they needed to talk about it, but that could wait, at least for a few moments. Hayes felt perfect in Rikar’s arms, and Rikar never wanted to let go.

Hopefully, he wouldn’t have to.

But both their lives had gotten even more complicated with Samara’s presence, and that was something else they’d need to talk about. Samara had told Hayes that she didn’t have parents anymore. She’d been in the human foster system before she was taken, which meant she didn’t have a family to go back to. Rikar wouldn’t allow anyone to put her back in that system when she needed a home, a family, and someone who would make sure she healed from what she’d gone through, both physically and mentally.

He didn’t know if that someone would be him, but he would if no one else volunteered. He just hoped it wouldn’t cost him his mate.

“Rikar!” someone screamed from inside the house.

Rikar jerked away from Hayes, almost stumbling. Hayes caught him before he could step into the hole behind him and crash down in his living room.

“It’s Samara,” Rikar said. She sounded terrified, which wasn’t surprising if she’d woken up to find him gone.

Hayes nodded. “Shimmer us in the house.”

Hayes was still holding Rikar’s arm, so it only took a few seconds for them to appear in the kitchen, where Samara was. She was in the middle of the room, wearing one of Rikar’s old t-shirts that fell to her knees, looking terrified. As soon as he appeared, she threw himself into his arms, and he had to step away from Hayes to grab her.

“I thought you left me,” she said.

He stroked her wild hair. “Never.”

“You weren’t there, like my mom. She was gone when I woke up, too.”

Rikar told himself that he didn’t know the entire story behind what Samara had just said and that it wouldn’t be the best idea for him to try to find and hunt down her mother.

“We were looking at the hole I made in the roof,” Hayes said. “Did you see it yesterday?”

Samara leaned away from Rikar, but she didn’t let go of him. “It’s big,” she said.

Hayes smiled easily. “It really is, and we need to fix it before it rains. That’s why we were on the roof.”

She nodded, still clinging to Rikar. Rikar doubted she’d let him go easily, but he had to take care of her.

He’d convinced her to shower yesterday and had to help her with her hair. He suspected they’d have to cut part of it because it was too tangled. They’d need a bunch of things, from new clothes to everything else a little girl would need. Rikar wasn’t thinking about school yet, especially since he didn’t know if Samara had any family other than the mother who’d abandoned her. He was trying not to get attached,
