“That’s why you wouldn’t come to the library with me.”

I glanced up from the screen on the kitchen table where I was watching a documentary about whales to find Landon standing in the doorway of his bedroom, sleep rumpled yet very much awake.

“I thought you were sleeping,” I replied with a smile. He’d gone to bed a few hours ago, but he was restless. I could hear him tossing and turning in his bed while he tried to sleep in between making little trips out of his room to stand at the doorway and clarify little pieces of information with me. So far, he’d come out to confirm that my clothing, my haircut, and my lack of knowledge about technology were because I died in 1938. And now I supposed the answer to why I was unable to come with him to see the town.

Landon nodded, then yawned and gave me a small smile. “The minute I lay down though, my head starts to race.”

“You’ll regret not sleeping tomorrow morning.”

“It already is tomorrow morning.” He sighed, turning and heading back into his room. I heard the thunk of his body hitting the bed, followed by the same tossing and turning he’d been doing. A glance at the clock told me that it actually was pretty early in the day, but the sun hadn’t risen just yet. I knew if I looked out the front window, I’d see it starting to peek over the horizon, but it wasn’t important. Instead, I focused on the documentary in front of me, absorbing information like a sponge because while I had known that whales existed and had seen pictures of them before, I had never seen them detailed like this. I felt very much like a newborn baby exploring and learning about the world they lived in as I sat watching these videos, but I didn’t mind. The world was incredible beyond the walls of this house, and I wanted to learn as much as I could before I got my portal back.

Truth be told, I was secretly waiting for Landon to fall asleep so I could have the opportunity to search for that video on his phone again. I was infinitely curious about the things I’d seen those two men doing. How it was pleasurable was both overwhelming to me and confusing at the same time. I understood the basic idea of it, but the sensations weren’t something I could wrap my head around. Hopefully, his soft snores would start emanating from his room soon so I could do a little bit of a different sort of learning. I suppose I could have asked Landon, but it still felt odd between us despite the second kiss he’d given me. The poor man was still trying to wrap his head around my reality, after all, I figured I shouldn’t throw “how does sex feel between men?” into the mix.

As the whale documentary drew to a close, I turned the volume down on the phone and cocked my ear towards the bedroom.
