Jonah was so tired the next morning, he could barely get out of bed. He’d decided, though, that rather than wonder about what was going to happen next, he would get to the bottom of it. This was home now, and he had to solve this mystery before another accident occurred. He couldn’t bear the thought of moving again.

Bruce was already trying to wake his group when Jonah joined him. Farther along the row of cabins, Kwame and Tasha were also trying to rouse their charges. Soon, they all stumbled along the path toward the lake. The sun was already up, and a golden mist hung over the water. The chill was fast dissipating.

“Carry on without me,” said Jonah as Bruce followed the campers. “Special assignment.” He was counting on the counselors being so busy, they wouldn’t have time to check with Mom about the “special assignment” he’d given himself.

“You okay?” said Bruce. “You look terrible.”

Jonah gave a thumbs up. He didn’t want to discuss his plans to find out more about the drowning with Bruce, or with anyone else. Not until he had the facts. Running through his mental checklist, he walked away. A hand on his shoulder made him jump. Heart thumping, he whirled around. It was Emma, joined by Amir.

“I’m sorry!” she said. “We didn’t mean to scare you. Aren’t you coming for the morning swim?”

Jonah forced a smile. “That’s okay. But no, have some stuff to do.” He wanted to confide in her so badly. She and Amir were the closest thing to friends out here. Since they’d moved to BC, he’d not had a chance to make friends. His cousins were in Toronto and, somehow, he didn’t feel like talking to Liam. It wasn’t often that he felt this comfortable with kids he’d just met. He was tempted to spew out every terrible thought running through his head and ask for their advice, but he restrained himself.

“Can I help?” asked Emma. “You look kind of lost and worried.”

Jonah’s insides glowed with warmth. Her concern made this bearable and even made him forget the horror in the lake for a few seconds. But this was stuff he could not tell them. If word got around, this camp would be shut down in a hurry. Dexter had already done enough damage by talking about the incident. Luckily, he wasn’t that popular at camp, and most believed he was saying this just to get attention. If the source turned out to be Jonah, they were doomed.

“Something wrong?” said Amir. His dark eyes looked from Jonah to Emma. “Is Dexter being a twat again?”

Jonah couldn’t help but smile at Amir’s British phrases. “I have to check up on something, but I’d like to talk to you guys after.” This was so impulsive of him, that right after he said it, he wanted to bite his tongue. His gut said he could trust Emma and Amir. He was sure they’d be able to help, but if Mom found out, she’d probably throw him into the lake herself.
