Chapter 21

“No!” Tyler kicked at her hands as she tried once again to put on his shoes.

That was about the twentieth “no” of the morning. Emily sighed and sat back on her heels. She hoped this wasn’t the start of some new phase. Ty had never really been a child prone to tantrums—he seemed to understand, on some basic level, there was no room in their lives for time-consuming arguments. Plus, Emily usually stood firm, never giving in to any demands associated with a tantrum. Even at three-and-a-half, Tyler realized that type of behavior got him nowhere.

But this was different. Since they’d arrived home from work a little after seven this morning, Tyler had been moody and out of sorts. The moment she’d started trying to get him ready for school, he’d fought her. And then the reason came out, setting her nerves on edge as well. Not a great combination.

According to Ty, Josiah had cried all night while they were gone, missing his friend. Now, he wanted Ty to stay home, as some sort of consolation.

Tyler hated to see people cry—whether it was her, other children, or, apparently, a ghost. He’d always been an extraordinarily empathetic child. So now he was refusing to go to school, and the harder she pushed, the more he resisted her efforts.

“I don’t wanna go!” His face turned red as he peeled off a striped sock and threw it on the floor. He checked for her reaction as he tugged on the other one.

She pressed her lips together before a word she’d rather not teach him escaped. At this point, they’d be late anyway, and she hated that, even if it was only preschool. She’d definitely miss Gayle during drop-off. But if they didn’t go at all, she’d also miss the chance to give her the notes during pick-up today as well.

It could probably wait until Friday. Gayle’s problems were new to Emily, and she was anxious to help her friend. But Gayle had been living with it for who knew how long; it was unlikely she’d be ready to leave her home, or even her abusive husband, based on one list of resources. The desire to get away would have to build, and Emily would have to be persistent. She could do that. She hoped the situation wouldn’t become more urgent in the next few days.

Clearly, Tyler sensed a win. He stood up, stomping up their stairs as fast as his little legs would carry him. “Staying home,” he chanted with every step.

She watched him go, her heart tightening as she noted how he still held on to the banister for safety, despite his show of defiance. With another sigh, she turned to the little windows framing the door. Last night’s high winds had blown the flowers off the cherry blossom tree in the front yard, frosting the lawn with bright pink petals.

Now what? She’d been planning on visiting the library while Ty was in school. That was out now. She couldn’t try to rest until naptime.
