Governor’s Mansion

The state of Nevada’s birthday falls on Halloween, October 31. This is why the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City is lavishly decorated with ghosts, goblins, and all manner of monsters every October. Regardless of which party is in power, it’s a long-held Carson City tradition that the governor dispenses candy to trick-or-treaters and well-wishers on the front steps of the mansion every Halloween night.

The state’s first ten governors did not have an official residence; it wasn’t until forty-five years after the state was admitted to the Union that the idea of a governor’s house was brought up in legislation. If had been left up to Governor John Sparks, who was in office at the time, the state’s top executive would not have an official residence. Fortunately for those who came later, Sparks was vetoed and the selection of a location began. Governor Sparks died in office in 1908 and wouldn’t live to see the new mansion completed the next year. Lieutenant Governor Denver Dickerson assumed the governor’s duties and he and his wife, Una, moved into the new mansion.

On the evening of January 1, 1910, Governor Dickerson and the first lady proudly held an open house so residents of Nevada could get a good look at the new mansion. With a winter storm raging across the Carson Valley, strong winds swept down from the Sierra. Icy sleet pelted the capital city, knocking out the mansion’s power. Undeterred, the governor and Mrs. Dickerson received their visitors by gaslight. Later everyone would remember how the glow of gaslight lent a charming ambiance to the evening and how elegant the first lady was in her embroidered crepe de chine gown.
