Chapter Eighteen

Maisy

* * *

With several containers of salt on hand, Zahn and I run a circle of salt around the house as I work a spell of protection, my words carrying on the wind as I speak them. I’m not sure if it’ll help any, since the spirits are already inside the home, but it may help to keep us safe from any other negative energy that may want to join in on the fun.

“Done.” I toss the empty boxes of salt into the dumpster and then unlock the door to my haunted home. We head inside as I watch Zahn wander about, taking in the place. “What do you think? It’s nice, right?”

He lets out a long whistle. “I can see why you took the risk and bought the place. It must have been gorgeous back in its day, since even now, it’s pretty damn impressive—and that’s with half the walls torn down.”

“Yeah, it was a hard one to pass up, given the amazing views and the potential here, though I swear I didn’t realize it’d be this haunted.” Or that it would try to kill me.

Zahn puts down his canvas backpack with his supplies and starts pulling out a few items. “I know you cleansed the place, but I’ve got a few extras added to my bundle of sage.”

“Tobacco?” I know he’s used it before.

“Yeah. Some sweetgrass and cedar, too—and whatever else Gran tossed into this.” Lighting the bundle of herbs, he waits for them to catch fire and light before blowing out the flames so that the ends of the herbs are just glowing red embers, throwing off plenty of smoke.

Fanning the embers, he starts in one corner, softly speaking a Cherokee prayer as the sound of his deep voice and the sweet and pungent smoke fills the air. Despite the tension that’s had my body in knots, I feel an easy peace settle around me as I breathe in the familiar scent, and feel Zahn’s energy wrap around me.

We slowly move from one room to another, but as I relax, I feel myself opening to whatever is haunting the place. I know it might be a good thing to open up to what’s here and figure out who’s haunting the place and why, so that I can try to help them move on. Yet I can’t, still freaked out by what happened to me the last time I let my protective walls down.

It hadn’t lasted long, but I found myself trapped inside my own body as a spirit took over. I managed to evict it with Zahn’s help, but it was damn scary. I’ve taken some precautions since then, but I’m not sure how effective my wards will be, especially if it’s against a more powerful energy.

With the first floor finished, we move up to the second floor. Zahn continues his work as we wander about, even if he gives me a look, complete with raised eyebrows, when he sees the room I’ve been living out of.
