VAJ’S GARAGE

Vaj’s Garage Restaurant & Filling Station is a great place to be if you happen to find yourself in Bristol, Wisconsin. One of the first things you will notice as you approach the entrance is a wooden sign overhead, on which is crudely written “DISMUSBEDABAR.” This must be the bar, indeed, because it was, in fact, the very tavern/eatery that I was hoping to find on Highway 45, about a half mile south of county road C. Some years ago, this bar was called G.L. Spirits, and it was well known in these parts as being haunted by a poltergeist.

Once inside, there is a long wooden bar, tables and booths with checkered tablecloths and hubcaps hanging from the ceiling, along with alcohol signs. It also becomes apparent that somebody here was a woodcarver. There are hand-carved wooden pieces everywhere that range from humorous signs to intricately carved, inverted half-barrels that cover the light fixtures on the ceiling. The east walls are made up mostly of large windows, all facing beautiful Lake George. From the bar, a person can gaze out the windows and see two volleyball courts, each with its own wooden scoreboard, which are accessible by rustic-looking ladders. Also outside, there are horseshoe pits and a few picnic tables. Beyond these, straight ahead, is the edge of Lake George. A narrow, jagged channel jets inland from the lake, coming to an abrupt end in the reeds at the rear of Vaj’s Garage.
