The Hunter Becomes the Hunted
The dreams certainly were intriguing. They were somewhat disturbing, but stopped short of being truly horrific. The most interesting facts about the visions were that they were repeated nightly, and that husband and wife experienced almost identical dreams.
The couple, Greg and Susie Potter, was vacationing in Estes Park, a very comfortable resort town set within some of the most spectacular mountain scenery on the continent. The dreams began the first night of their one-week stay there at the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park.
Their dreams always began with the close-up view of a man running. He is running flat out, as fast as he possibly can. His red, sweaty face is contorted by his strenuous physical effort. His breathing is labored and ragged; he is at the edge of collapse from complete exhaustion. His eyes have an unfocused stare of total terror. It is clear now that the man is quite literally running for his life. In the dream, the view shifts from a close-up of the manâs agonized form to include a broader view of his situation. The reason for his evident panic becomes clear. He is being pursued, at least in most dreams, by a thundering herd of buffalo. In a few instances the pursuers are enraged grizzly bears. The dream continues to the same climaxâthe moment that the running man finally collapses, brought down by his ferocious, frantic, and persistent pursuers.
Oddly, the young couple who experienced these repeating dreams did not share the mysterious manâs terror. As the dreams repeated with minor variations, the dreamers began to notice a group of Native Americans in the background who seemed to be watching the action intently. Their faces were impassive, displaying no sympathy for the plight of the running man.
What did all of this mean and why would two people have almost identical dreams? When they returned home, Greg and Susie talked with a psychic, who explained that they had vacationed in an area that was steeped in the emotional energies of some highly traumatic events in the past. The presence of other, emotionally detached observersâthe Indiansâwas significant to the psychic. She believed that the Pottersâ dreams actually related to the strong perceptions, and perhaps wishes, of the Indians. âRead up on the local history of Estes Park, particularly the history involving Indians, buffalo and bears, and a terrorized white man.â
It wasnât long before their readings revealed the story of George Gore, for whom the Gore Mountains were named. Sir Gore, a member of the Irish aristocracy, had led a memorable hunting expedition to Colorado in 1855. He is known to have hunted in the north, middle, and south parks of the Colorado Rockies. These âparksâ actually are huge natural meadows occupying high mountain basins. Their lush grasses attract deer, antelope, and buffalo, which in turn attract grizzly bears and mountain lionsâcreating a hunterâs paradise.
Sir Gore was the type of arrogant aristocrat who hunted only for the thrill of killing. He did not hunt for meat or hides, but rather for glory.
