Chapter Ten

Kenoe woke from a refreshing after-sex nap, rolled out of bed and eased into the private bath. He returned with a warm, moist towel. Bending to gently cleanse the tender folds between Shinju’s legs, he was brought up short by her words.

“No, don’t. I like the way you smell on me. I’m going to wear you for a little while, then I’ll shower.”

Amazing how a woman could be such a mix of sweet, shy, sexy and bold.

Kenoe left to wash up alone then roused a dozing Shinju.

“Why didn’t you wait and shower with me?” she grumped sleepily.

“Because, if I get in the shower with you, lovely, neither of us will get to wash anything. Especially with you smelling so good.”

“Mmm. What do I smell like?” she teased on a sleepy sigh.

“Mine.” He dropped a kiss on her nose, dressed quickly, and popped into the cockpit to check in with the pilot. Bix must have felt this was of major importance to send Randall to fly him home. Randall was an elite Seeker who’d flown them on every mission Kenoe’d been on. Randall was, in a word, the best. Able to fly just about any military-grade aircraft ever made, the man seemed just as at home in this luxury private jet.

“Hey, Randall.”

“What’s up, squirt?”

Kenoe chuckled. At five-foot-seven, Randall was the shortest vampire he’d ever met.

Even though he had to look up at Kenoe, the man was also the oldest, most experienced and ruthless member of their team, still kicking ass at a hale two hundred fourteen years.

Randall had seen and experienced far more than Kenoe—or as Alaan so lovingly called him, a Hatsept pup of a mere sixty-two years.

“Can you patch me through to Bix, buddy?”

Randall flipped a few switches and handed Kenoe a pair of over-ear headphones with a short telescoping microphone built into the earpiece.

“Bix, I’ve got Kenoe on the line. Hold on a second and I’ll patch you through. Yep, he’s sitting right here next to me on a secure line.” He glanced at Kenoe and signaled the go-ahead.

“Hatsept here.”

“Hey. How’s it going?”

“Hell, I don’t have the slightest idea how to answer that question.”

“Should I take that to mean you haven’t claimed the woman?”

“Bix, you know as well as I do that the bond won’t form unless we both truly want it…”

“Which means you haven’t told her what you are or what she is to you, right?”

Nothing but a heavy sigh ensued.

“And,” Bix continued, “you probably haven’t told her you’re a Seeker for the Council, and the man who’s brought her brother to our attention.”

Kenoe’s silence told it all. He grimaced into the mouthpiece. Bix was one of the only men in the world that could make him feel like a little kid who hadn’t washed behind his ears well.

“Listen, I understand exactly how you feel, Kenoe. You want to protect her, and you want her to have a choice in the joining. I wanted the same for Carin. Handle this your own way, but you’d better
