I bought a copy of The Gazette from a newspaper stand; the front page headline was about a suspicious house fire on the South Side, a prosperous part of town where toffs and crooks mingled in equal measure. Ray Heston lived there himself, just along from his casino. I stopped and read the story for a while, listening to an old guy with a mangy grey beard playing sax solo. He looked like a tramp in a stained ill fitting suit, with shoes that did not match bar the fact that both soles had ripped away at the front. And there he was playing On the Sunny Side of the Street. I threw some coins into a battered snuff tin lying on the floor at the old sax player’s feet and then proceeded down towards The Haven. Finally I took a position a few feet away from the brothel’s entrance, leaning against the wall and reading The Gazette. It was full of crime stories, including alleged corruption in Southbury’s police force. I finally flicked through to the society pages, which was dominated by a feature written by Rick Bingham on the attendance of Emma and Ned Brightwell at The Blue Bay club. Several photographs captured Emma’s natural beauty next to her husband’s frowning mug. There was also a smaller picture of Maria Donatella and Smooth, looking as though they were a happy couple, so deeply in love. It struck me that Emma and Maria looked quite alike; the same height, the same curves in all the right places and the same alluring eyes. I was suddenly distracted as the door to The Haven opened and two young hookers emerged. I followed them, keeping a few paces behind. Finally I moved up alongside.
