CHAPTER SEVEN
Soltani, Regional Command East, had requested fire support, With my wingman Fuzz, we were scrambled and immediately raced out to our awaiting Harriers, before quickly getting strapped in, undertaking quick pre-flight checks and setting off. We had been called to go and support some Special Forces who were under heavy attack on the Pakistani border. The SBS had gone in, to capture a local Taliban commander and had hit resistance that had ended up higher than expected. The position had a greater number of Taliban than expected and heavier weapons than expected too.
We raced to the scene, knowing that every second counted for the guys on the ground. Being in the air was generally far, far safer than being on the ground under intense fire. The odd stray bullet may come our way, a SAM was our only real threat along with effective AA fire. There was quite low cloud cover today, with the base at 4000 feet and the tops varied between 11,000 and 26,000 feet. This hindered visibility a little, but once on station, I could see the fierce fire fight below. The SBS had become virtually pinned down by the sheer volume of fire along with the weight of Taliban fighters. I knew we needed to even the odds and give the Special Forces a chance.
Due to the close proximity of the Taliban to the SBS, we could only use our rockets carefully and would strafe the Taliban from behind the SBS. My first pass concentrated on the main group of Taliban laying down fire; from just behind a wall, just outside the main compound. I aimed for the wall itself, hoping that would catch the Taliban fighters crouched behind it and firing over the top. As I approached the target I could see the muzzle flashes coming from the various positions. I lined up via my HUD and hit the pickle button.
The rockets ripped through both the Taliban and the wall, like a knife through butter, tearing many of the Taliban apart in a large cloud of dust. Many, though, upon hearing an attacking jet, had taken cover where they could find it, and they popped back out after I had made my first pass.
Pushing ZG477into a tight turn and 45 degree bank, I went back around for another pass, while my wingman flew in and fired rockets at another Taliban position. With a single pass he had killed seven Taliban fighters instantaneously as his rockets rained down on them.
The SBS was now getting some room to breathe - rather than just laying down covering fire, this meant they could start to move up, onto their objective. We went in with several more passes, meaning the assault by the SBS could pick up the pace and become dynamic once again. Sadly, they also had a casualty with a serious bullet wound to his leg; whilst still alive, he would not be for much longer if they did not get him any proper medical attention ASAP. The SBS operative had been lucky as it had just missed his femoral artery by millimetres.
