EPILOGUE

It had been a while since Gideon had rehabilitated a horse. These days, he mostly just rode them every chance he got when Allison had a break in between opening new stores.

In the year since their daughter had been born, Allison had opened three more Sweet Tooth shops, and he couldn’t be prouder. Her business model was much different from her first time in the corporate world. This time around, she only built in small towns that had big tourist trades. With each grand opening, he loved watching her confidence bloom. Sure, since she was the family’s main breadwinner, some might say she wore the pants in the family, but he preferred thinking of himself as their son and daughter’s COP—chief operating parent.

On this warm June day in Breckenridge, Colorado, he sat on one of the store’s signature front porch benches. Chip and Dale—he’d fought her on their daughter’s name—napped in their stroller.

When Allison finally emerged, leaving the rest of the grand-opening festivities to Mrs. Gentry and Holly to hostess, she sat alongside him, resting her head on his shoulder. “I’m pooped.”

“I don’t blame you.” He smoothed her hair, kissing the crown of her head. “You know, it would be all right if you took a break.”

“I know, but…”

“You’ll never stop building your empire until it’s bigger than Sugar Rush.”

She sat up. “Am I that transparent?”

“Babe…” He kissed her long and leisurely before delivering a lecture she probably didn’t want to hear. “In my eyes, you already are a hero. Now that you’re pregnant again, don’t you think it’s time to slow down?”

“Is that a challenge? Do you think I can’t do it all? Because—”

“Shh…” He kissed her quiet. “I have zero doubt that you can and will accomplish anything you set your mind to. My only question is should you? We have more than enough money to send these two to college for their doctorates, and still have enough left over for all four—soon to be five—of us to travel the globe. What we don’t have is enough time. I miss baking with you and making salt dough ornaments.”

“But what about my business? I can’t lose it. It’s my family.”

“No, sweetheart—we’re your family. I love you. The kids love you. As long as I’m alive, you’ll never be alone again.”

“Promise?”

He kissed her long and hard, assuring her with his body what he couldn’t convey with words. Her love had been the key to making him whole again. What kind of husband would he be if he couldn’t return the favor?
