EPILOGUE

AS USUAL ON Christmas Eve night, snow fell on Mannington, Kansas. One year after their first Christmas together, Nick and Leni left the totally remodeled Family Diner, which they now owned and which they paid George handsomely to manage. The old Christmas bells that typically hung from the streetlights had been cleaned up and repainted. Red ribbons graced the parking meters. The storefronts for the bakery, coffee shop, auto mechanic and grocery had been renovated. All the sidewalks had been repaved.

Wearing a black leather jacket and to-die-for black boots with jeans and a new white turtleneck sweater, Leni took a long drink of air. “Do you think your mom will like what we got her for Christmas?”

“I’m not exactly sure how you had time to shop when you were arranging to move one of Hinton Industries’ manufacturing plants here.”

“I had a little help from a special Santa.”

Nick laughed. “I’m glad you figured out how to get help.” He glanced at her. “It’s been a busy year for you.”

“And you.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t become wealthy overnight, meet a new brother and sister, go through a complicated surgery with my adoptive dad and singlehandedly become the redevelopment authority for one very happy small town.”

She grinned. Becoming a Hinton heir had been one surprise after another. Fixing up her small town, making it somewhere everybody loved to live, had been the obvious thing to do. But finding real love with Nick, finding a partner, had made it all like a great adventure.

“It was a fabulous year.”

As always when she said the word fabulous, they exchanged a glance and laughed.

“Now, you have to plan a wedding.”

She took in a deep drink of air. “Is this a proposal?”

“Yes.” He laughed. “Finally.” He pulled a ring box from his jacket pocket, paused in the street and got down on one knee. “Leni Long, will you do me the honor of being my wife, my life partner, person destined to spend most of our money?”

Though she had been expecting the proposal, tears filled her eyes. “Yes.”

He got up and kissed her. As always, her heart warmed, then her limbs warmed, then heat filled her. Somedays she couldn’t believe this man loved her. Other days, she couldn’t believe she’d managed so many years without him.

They broke the kiss and smiled at each other. Looking at her beautiful ring, she said, “Where should we get married?”

“Well, your dad loves the Key West house.”

She pondered that, gazing around at the new storefronts as they walked through the snow on their way to the house they’d built as their home base. His New York penthouse was empty more than it was occupied these days.

Friends said hello and waved as they walked by. Snow sparkled in the glow of the streetlights. The sound of the choir rippled out from the well-lit church where Christmas Eve services were being held.

This was and always would be her home.

She stopped Nick. “I think I’d like to get married here.”

He glanced around. “Here?”

“On Christmas Eve.”

“Christmas Eve?”

“And I’d like to invite the whole town.
