CHAPTER TWO

CHRISTOPHER STARED AT the woman whom he’d thought of as his hero. Why was she so angry at Miss Taylor’s generous offer? He put up a hand. “I never said we’d move in with your aunt.”

“Good. Because you’re not.”

Tempted to contradict her just to take the smirk off her face, he instead counted to three, like he’d taught his children, before things were said that couldn’t be taken back. At three, he drew in a deep breath. “Your aunt is very kind, but I don’t think moving in with her is the best idea.”

Miss Taylor started to protest, but Penny cut her off. “Exactly. She has enough going on that she doesn’t need to take on anything else.”

“I understand completely.” And he did. This was his problem, not Miss Taylor’s. “I’ll find other arrangements.”

Penny nodded at him. “If I can help…”

Miss Taylor cleared her throat. “If you two are finished deciding my life for me, I’d like to add something.” She pointed at Penny. “You don’t get to decide what I’m able to do. And you.” She pointed at him. “Stop being too proud to accept a little help. You have two children to think about.”

“I haven’t stopped thinking about them.” He placed Caesar on the grass next to his feet, then glanced at his watch. It was just past noon, with hours to go before the school day ended, but he wanted to see his kids. Wanted to hug them and assure himself that they could face even this. At least they’d be together. “In fact, I’ll need to go to the school and tell them what happened.”

“And take them where?” When he didn’t answer, Miss Taylor smiled widely at him. “It’s a short-term solution. That’s it. Take a few days over the holiday to figure things out.”

She had a point. Once Thanksgiving was over, motels would have open rooms. He only had to get through the next few days. Then he could move the family out of Miss Taylor’s home. The question of how long they’d be without a house made his head hurt. Finally, he nodded. “Okay. But just for a few days.”

“No.” Penny stepped between her aunt and himself. She looked like an angel ready to do battle. “I won’t let you move in. My aunt isn’t able to take care of you all.”

Her aunt smiled at her. “Then you can move in, too, and help me out. I’m sure Shelby wouldn’t mind if you stayed with me for a while.”

“That’s not the point.”

Miss Taylor gave her niece a stern look until Penny finally held up her hands. “Fine. Temporarily.” She glared at him before turning on her heel and joining the rest of her squad.

He felt as if he’d just made an enemy, but Miss Taylor laughed it off. “Oh, we’re going to have so much fun. Now leave the dog with me, and you go pick up your children and bring them over to my house. I can watch them while you go shop for those essentials you’ll need.
