CHAPTER SIX
Mike turned to her, placing his palm against her cheek. âWhatâs worrying you, Vivian? Is it Thane?â
âThane?â she asked in surprise. âNot at all. Thaneâs gone, Mike, and heâs never coming back to me. I keep saying itâhe would want me to go on with my life. I know that for certain.â
âYouâre right about that,â Mike said, caressing her cheek and then playing with a long lock of her hair. âHe would want you to, just as you would want him to if something had happened to you. So what is it?â
âI just donât understand your attitude about my inheritance.â
There was a long moment of silence.
âIf I didnât have that kind of income and inheritance, you would date me after tonight, wouldnât you?â she asked.
âI probably would, but thereâs no way to think about you without your inheritance because it exists and it isnât going away. I canât deal with that, Vivian. Maybe it was because of growing up without much, but thereâs no way I can go out with a woman who has inherited millions from her husband and is heir to a man worth billions. I was raised to feel that a man who relies on a woman for money isnât really a man. Before my aunt divorced my uncle, she offered to give dad money to pay when my youngest brother was born. I can still remember that fight and my dad wouldnât take a penny. It might not have been smart, but thatâs just the way I am.â
She sat up and pulled the sheet up beneath her arms. âI have never known anyone who objected to money.â
âI donât object to money. Iâd be happy to have a bunch, but not from the woman I love. Iâd feel like a kept man. Iâd feel like I couldnât be myself, argue about anything. Youâll never understand, because you were born into that and youâve lived with it all your life. Itâs your family and your family money. It has belonged to you since the day you were born.â He tunneled his fingers through his hair and blew out a breath. âYou may not be able to understand how I feel but my feelings are real. My dad had strong feelings about it and taught his sons that the man should pay, the man should have the money. Also, his brother married a wealthy woman, and they fought over everything and she was snippy when she would come to our house. She would leave my mom in tears about what a dump we lived in. It was home and we liked it. They finally divorced, but she caused some hard feelings and bad times. As a kid there were times Iâve gone hungry rather than have some woman who wasnât related, buy my dinner. The year dad died was bad and we did go to bed hungry. I had a teacher who would try to buy my lunch and I just couldnât let her do it. Thatâs just how I was brought up.
