Chapter 9

Zeke

It took me fifteen minutes to make arrangements for everyone to meet just off the interstate on the way to Destiny’s house the next day so we could pull in as a united front. I also called my sister and told her something had come up and we’d have to reschedule.

Aaron promised he’d have an officer there for us, to be sure everyone minded their manners.

And now I was worried Destiny might have sex with me to ensure she’d have a place to live, but thank goodness my lion made me see some sense. She’d wanted me for weeks and I’d put her off. Also, she’d made a promise not to do anything she wasn’t already planning to do, and I smelled truth when she said it.

If she was so distraught she wasn’t emotionally okay for it, I’d know. Right? Yes. I’d know.

Before I went back into the house, I’d made up my mind to play it by ear — and smell — and see how the evening went.

She was sitting at my kitchen table, staring at her phone when I came in.

“Everything okay?’

“Yeah, I’ll need to get my own cell plan tomorrow. They’ll probably take me off theirs at the first opportunity.”

“We’ll do that in the morning before we get your things. You can give them your new number when you see them.”

She nodded, and I told her, “We’ll have a pickup truck and an SUV, and I can arrange for a box truck if you think they’ll let you have your furniture.”

“I don’t know if they will or not, but it’s only a few pieces and should fit in the back of a pickup. My guess is they’ll have everything I can take out on the front lawn, so no one has to be invited inside.”

“I’m sorry.”

She shook her head. “Not your fault. I lied, these are the consequences. I hated lying to them — I knew it was wrong.”

“They didn’t give you a choice.”

She shrugged. “I always had a choice. I took the easy way out. I owe them an apology, but they aren’t ready to hear it yet.”

She’d put her bathing suit back on while I was out back, and I still had mine on. “Come on, let’s get something to drink and head back out to the pool.”

When the lot beside my house had gone up on the auction block, I’d jumped on it, and then sprung for the fence and the pool. I may not be able to let my lion run as often as I like, but swimming laps in my human form comes a close second when I need to work something out. And right now, I needed to work the adrenaline out of my system. I can heal from most everything, but a close shot from a forty-five could be devastating and there were no guarantees I’d be able to make the change fast enough to survive the damage if I took a direct hit to the heart or brain.

I swam laps on my own for probably ten minutes.
