The aircraft in this picture is believed to be the He 111H-3, coded 6N+AB, in which von Casimir was in turn shot down on 29 May 1940. The victor on this occasion was 24-year-old Flying Officer Jack Wykeham Lydall who had been at the controls of a 46 Squadron Hurricane, L1816. Von Casimir had taken off from Trondheim to attack British shipping at Ofotfjorden near Narvik. Following the combat with Lydall, he force-landed at Ulsvåg in the province of Hamarøy, Norway. Both he and Oberleutnant Wolfgang Metzke were captured and spent most of the war in Canada. The Bordmechaniker, Unteroffizier Walter Schwarz, was killed, whilst Helmut Grubbe (Beobachter) and Unteroffizier Ewald Korth (Bordfunker) were both wounded, captured and later released. The number ‘52’ that can be seen just in front of the Kampfgruppe 100 emblem represents the last two digits of the werke nummer.
Flight Officer Lydall was shot down and killed near Beisjford later on the same day. He is buried in Narvik New Cemetery.
Kampfgruppe 100 briefly operated from the frozen Lake Jonsvatnet near Trondheim during the early stages of the Norwegian Campaign. The individual in the centre of the small group man-handling the oil drum has been identified as Oberfeldwebel Hilmar Schmidt, a Beobachter with 2/Kampfgruppe 100. The aircraft behind the three men is 6N+OH of 1/Kampfgruppe 100. Schmidt and his crew first arrived at Trondheim on 16 April 1940, when this photograph is believed to have been taken, but left the next day.
