The M40 155 mm (6.1 inch) Gun Motor Carriage was another U.S. gun produced late in World War 2. It had a chassis based on the M4A3 Sherman medium tank. Only one gun, a test vehicle, saw a combat zone in Europe. Some reports say even more guns made it to the European Theater. This gun could carry twenty 155 mm projectiles. It used the M1, 155 mm gun, the same as the successful towed 155 mm Long Tom howitzer. This gave it a range of almost 15 miles (24 km). Its 340 hp engine made possible an operational range of 106 miles (170 km). Maximum speed for this 40-ton (36,287 kg) vehicle was about 24 miles (38 km) per hour. Just over 300 M40s were produced. Many were deployed to Korea during that war and served admirably along the 38th Parallel.

The M40 is the sister howitzer of the M43. They essentially have the same chassis and look. The only difference is the M43 has an 8-inch bore.
